Good service, beautiful surroundings and a spectacular view.

Jan 11th, 2020

Checking in reception and the entire resort with its views and the area – what’s not to love! Swerving through winding roads, we were taken in by the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, beaches and the blue skies of Elounda, searching our awaiting resort. The vehicle entrance is steep and narrow with some extreme twists, but once at reception level, it’s all smooth sailing. As we both stepped out of the car, we paused to gaze at the magnificent mountains and breathe in the calmness of the distant sea, before we took our suitcases to the reception. An air of lavender-lime scent coolness is what hit me upon entering the reception area with its open space and cream marble tiled floors. Opulent with glass walls showing the outdoor mountains, there was a cushioned cream couch in the centre, luxurious and decadent. The glass windows were juxtaposed with the wall containing the grand palatial mural, perhaps depicting the myth of Pasiphae frolicking with her bull as punishment from Poseidon. We certainly took the bull by the horns in getting here through those winding roads, but we were finally rewarded with a steaming hot citrus towel accompanied by a cold glass of lemonade with a surprisingly refreshing salty aftertaste. After the checking in process, we finally were able to be swept off our feet, literally by a golf cart to a top-of-the-hill upgraded private pool room! (Lucky for us - we must have come during the less busy season, but we were ever so grateful. We did spend a lot for a nice room though). The golf cart was part of the service so we didn’t have to climb back to the top every day. In the mornings or after dinner, we didn’t mind the exercise so we didn’t often call for one. We were mainly out of breath reaching the top, or maybe I should speak for myself. My legs felt very toned after this trip.  The Room Needless to say from the pictures, you can see how amazingly relaxed we were in this comfort of luxury. The bed was firm and comfortable to sleep in, with lots of space for two people (being a king size). It was always lovely and quiet so we could rest. Breakfast Although I think children can be respectful and quiet, with this being an “adult” only resort, it was nice to be around adults who for the most part were considerably quiet and respectful of others especially during breakfast time, giving each other space between tables. I had peaceful breakfasts overlooking the pool and the sun silhouetted by mountains in the background. The breakfast always had good choices of fruit, yogurt, granola and eggs. My boyfriend especially devoured the pancakes as I did this delicious Greek looking almond crumble biscuit. Sunrise The sunrise here is so beautiful, it nearly had me in tears when I first got a glimpse early in the morning. You have to wake up at about 6 am (which I realise is not everyone’s cup of tea), but it’s the only way you can capture such beauty with your camera and go on a tranquil walks. I didn’t get up every day at this time, but when I did, it was well worth the journey. Try to catch the sunrise in Elounda if you can.  Sunsets Although the sunsets were not as fantastic, it was still pretty awesome to look out into the patio sipping a glass of wine before taking a walk to the town of Elounda for dinner. Walking Distance Ellounda is about a 25 minute walk and such a beautiful walk it is. We ate in the main town in the evenings. Drinking can get expensive, so a tip from me would be to go to a grocery store via car in the day and stock up on some wine for the room. Bring a wine opener, as you’ll want to try the local Cretan wines if you are a wine lover. The Service The service here was impeccable. Each staff member catered to us and treated us really nicely. Everyone was helpful and friendly. The Private Beach This resort has its own secluded private beach which was so convenient and relaxing. If you want a beach holiday, here it is folks! The Private Beach Bar & Restaurant The seafood here was the best we ate in our overall trip to Crete. Fresh with grilled vegetables and delicious local wines, we dined by the sea. We ate here twice but only for lunch, as it closes in the evening. Equally the bar was nice too, although it closes pretty early. We liked having our first tipple here before heading off to Elounda town one evening. Everything in this area is quiet in the evenings, so that’s a plus if you want a relaxing beach resort. The Restaurants We only went to the main restaurant (apart from the beach restaurant) and the food was exquisite, although very expensive. They had amazing kir royal cocktails and this was my boyfriend’s favourite place to eat. They have a choice of three restaurants overall but we only went to two. (We didn’t try the sushi, although I have seen excellent reviews). Things I didn’t like Expensive Clearly, the area around this resort as well as this resort is expensive. It’s not such a terrible thing but something to be aware of before you come to Elounda. If you want to come here, make sure you save up and have enough for food and drinks, etc. Dropping off what at the pool? It’s not really onerous on the hotel although they could have engineered these “private” pools better? My boyfriend and I stepped out into our own patio pool area at about 3 o clock in the afternoon. We talked quietly for a bit and we relaxed on the patio sun-decks taking a mini nap. We opened our eyes all of a sudden as we heard a woman on our right side in her patio behind the wall, literally having an orgasm along with a man repeatedly grunting. They were getting louder and louder and faster and faster. It felt like there was almost no wall in between us anymore with the sounds of water being splashed rhythmically as they moaned into the air causing a small ripple into our pool. Yes that’s right folks - they were right next to us, having it off, doing it in the pool. Maybe their mattress wasn’t comfortable? Or maybe they like to make their outdoor performances? Or maybe they were not aware of people next to them? To say we froze in embarrassment is an understatement. We dared not get up or move. They would notice us listening if we moved, so we stayed lying on the deck chairs quietly until they finished whilst we texted each other messages and giggled quietly. It was like an awkward scene from a comedy skit, only we were really appalled. We had no idea what to do! Without going into too many details about our loud neighbours, we were not comfortable going into that pool water. (Although the pools are “private”, they merge with the waters from all of the adjoining “private” pools). Luckily the next morning, we saw a pool cleaner so we felt better about dipping in. We never complained to the hotel about this, as what could they do? We also didn’t want to make a scene and we came to relax – not complain. All I can say is we came to an “adult” only hotel to relax under the assumption that adults are usually quieter than children, but this has now proved me wrong! I found that adults can be just as inconsiderate, selfish, unaware, stupid and rude. We certainly didn’t want it to ruin our holiday, so we laughed about it in the end and moved on. Besides, we were grateful when we noticed different guests staying the next night and relieved that on both sides, our neighbours were considerate and quiet. The Bathroom - Spray it, contain it and drain it! The other thing I found challenging was the “bathroom”. There was no bath. It was more of a “wet” room which I don’t do well with anyway. This wet room had one floor level only which meant that after taking a shower, there was excess water which wouldn’t drain away. Hence I had to step in puddles after my boyfriend took his shower, just so I could use the toilet. After taking a shower, the build-up of excess water took more than an hour to dry. Not fun! Overall, I had a blissful stay at Marmin Bay. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Royal Marmin Bay Hotel Elounda. Crete

Nov 11th, 2019

Recently stayed at the Royal Marmin Bay Boutique & Art Hotel in Crete in September for a week. We booked this hotel because it was an Adults only place and all rooms have sea views. We chose the basic room as mainly all you do is sleep in it. However, in hindsight I would go for a larger one next time. Room comfort bed etc are excellent, the one irritating thing to my partner and myself was a “knocker” on the bathroom door which made a loud noise every time you went in or out of the bathroom (the door opened both ways and had no lock) we had to put a hand towel on the knocker so it didn’t wake either of us up going to the toilet in the middle of the night. We were not overly impressed with the Poseidon à la carte restaurant, with price versus quality not what we would personally expect from this standard of hotel, external Taverna’s are much better. The buffet was mediocre in the evening, but the breakfast was excellent with a wide choice for everyone. On a plus side and the main reason I would go back to this hotel are the staff, Doxa & Klio two of the ladies in the main restaurant/bar were superb and great fun, they deserve to be noticed by the management. Korina & George on the front desk were also extremely helpful. The hotel is on the side of a hill, so electric golf buggies are used to shuttle you around, Marios & Elvis two of the drivers were also great and helpful in shuttling us around. We initially had a room looking straight into the kitchen of the Poseidon restaurant, which was not my idea of a sea view, but we were moved after the first night, so the managers were also very helpful to us in accommodating this. Overall impression of the hotel was a calming environment, great location, spectacular views, spotless rooms and everywhere else, highly recommended. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Over-rated

Last year we stayed in a nice nearby hotel and thought we would upgrade ths year. That was a mistake. There are major design problems. The room is small and the bathroom is also. The marble on the bathroom floor is not flush with the glass partition and thus I tripped over it twice. The bathroom door doesn't have a regular handle but rather a metal ring to grasp. Thus, anytime the door is opened or closed there is a noisy clang. It woke my wife. When we arrived the TV was not plugged in and was disconnected form the cable system. But the real problem was with the bathroom. It had an unpleasant smell when we arrived. We propped the door open and opend the window and the smell went away, but it came back overnight. When we checked out, i mentioend that there had been bathroom problems. The person at reception didn't bother to ask about it. So, i assume the problems continue for the next guest. Warning: the property is very steep and walking is difficult so you have to call to have a cart pick you up. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Nice hotel but not 5 star

Nov 2nd, 2019

7 night stay in Mid October, hotel definitely had end of season feel. Attention to detail was not that of a five star. A busy restaurant with mixed service, generally the women were attentive, men not so much with lots of chipped crockery. Food was generally of a good standard, particularly breakfast. Our room had suffered water damage with a few blown walls and water damage with swollen wardrobe doors, bathroom towels in rooms very worn. Rooms cleaned very well by polite staff. Sushi restaurant was excellent. Good service at the bar on the beach, the gentleman running the sunbed service seemed to always be in the right place at the right time for all guests. A nice hotel in a great location with stunning views which could be so much more. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Hotel with amazing views

Oct 24th, 2019

Staff are in the main very warm and friendly, Need to mention waiter on beach bar and in Restaurant Meg, Nikoli and Margarita. reception and information desk at front of hotel could be much more welcoming and less officious. On arrival it felt like I was in a government office having my papers checked then he gave me a welcome drink after getting a tired traveller to complete documents. Not a great start. For a 5 star, staff could be a bit more attentive in restaurant. Lighting in Athena restaurant needs to be more subdued . It is a bit stark at night and dining indoors is a much more inferior experience than dining on terrace where seating was limited . If you didn't get there by 7.40pm , you were indoors.
