Third Time Not A Charm
Jun 24th, 2019
I thought that I would give our experience at the Royal Sonesta a month "to settle" before launching into anything too scathing. A month has passed so here goes. In a nutshell, we spent the evening of May 23, 2019 at the Royal Sonesta on Bourbon Street, as part of a nineteen day road trip from Miami to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and out of the sixteen hotels where we stayed, our stay at the Royal Sonesta was far and away the least pleasant. And it was also far and away the most expensive; costing over $400 for one night including parking and taxes. We arrived at about 12:30 pm and after greeting our old friend, bellman Ebanks, we attempted an early check in. This was our third time staying in this hotel and anticipated being warmly received. With the exception of Ebanks and the parking attendants, we were not. The desk clerk advised us that check in is at 4:00 pm and our room (a room with a balcony overlooking Bourbon Street) was not ready. We would be accorded "pre-check in." She advised further (why I have no idea in light of how we were to be treated) that the supervisor of housekeeping, in her discretion, could arrange to have the preparation of our room expedited. We sat in the hotel lobby, on a coach directly in front of the check in clerks, from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. This story is not one of "out of sight out of mind." In the intervening two and one half hours numerous guests were accorded early check in. Finally, at 3 p.m. I asked to speak with the manager. The manager on duty, upon hearing that we had been waiting since 12:30 pm to check in, advised that the check in time was 4 p.m. I advised her that his was not the right answer. At this point I was compelled to make several observations concerning customer service and the rules of "hospitality" in general. I also observed that the 4 p.m. check in had not applied to the numerous other guests who had arrived after we did and had been provided access to their rooms. I also advised that we had been told that the supervisor of housekeeping had the discretion to expedite the preparation of our room if she was so inclined. Soon after speaking with the manager, my phone rang and I was told that our room was ready. It is my sense that the room that we were given had been ready all day and we were given a room other than the one that we were waiting for. This shoddy treatment was upsetting and ruined our one day visit to New Orleans. Each of the hotels where we stayed during our nineteen day road trip, including the Royal Sonesta, sent us an email survey asking specific questions concerning our experiences with them. Each of the managers of those hotels, with the exception of the Royal Sonesta, sent us email messages thanking us for taking the time to respond to their surveys. We received absolutely nothing - typically a bad review will prompt a hotel manager to say something to the effect: "I am sorry that we could not meet your expectations." Not so with the Royal Sonesta which provided nothing. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
A good hotel right on Bourbon St.
Jun 22nd, 2019
Had a king room with a small balcony on a side street off Bourbon St. and it was surprisingly quiet. The room was clean and the staff super friendly and helpful and a big plus is the live music in The Jazz Playhouse seven nights a week. Had breakfast each morning at the Desire restaurant with great service from server Ruthie who has been there for 40 years. If you want a room in the French Quarter right where the action is, this is the place to stay. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Nice Hotel, But.......

From first appearances, outside and inside, this hotel stands out as ‘yes, I’ve made the right choice’, only to be slightly let down by the receptionist that checked us in. We arrived at the desk only to be told by this chap to go wait in line (there was nobody waiting). A moment later he called us forward and checked us in. We asked for a quiet room, he said it was and we would be fine. On entering the bedroom which overlooked Bourbon Street, the noise from outside was constant drumming. The receptionist quite honestly didn’t care. We changed rooms, thankfully helped by a lovely young lady, and have a room overlooking the swimming pool. Much better. The swimming pool situation was another issue. Though I’m passed what one might call the flower of youth, I found the young people who stood in the pool drinking from cans and making a nuisance of themselves completely annoying, making it near impossible to use the pool for which it was designed, that is to swim. Management turned a blind eye from this as bar sales must have been impressive. The hotel is situated right on Bourbon Street and there may be many that enjoy this street. To me it was a cesspit of drunken, loud, drugged up misfits, making for a quite frightening experience every time we went out of the hotel. The stench in the morning was quite unbearable, indeed it was too much for one particular rat one morning who was found lying dead on the sidewalk. There are so many beautiful, lively streets in New Orleans, vibrant and exciting, but Bourbon Street is definitely not one of them. Please be aware of this dangers. Can’t fault the hotel. Good sleep quality, excellent food and generally helpful staff. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Centrally located. Asked for a quiet room, not overlooking Bourbon Street was a good move. Nice hotel, clean rooms. Great Happy Hour specials at the bar downstairs. Recommend this hotel. Lots to do in the area and everything within an easy walk. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Excellent staff, room + amenities, and location! I couldn't have asked for a better hotel stay in New Orleans right in the middle of Bourbon street. I will definitely come back to stay at the Royal Sonesta New Orleans. Everything about my experience there was TOP NOTCH! From Check In to Check Out - Royal Sonesta had everything I needed and more. The room was fabulous and gave me an "at-home" feeling that I completely unpacked my suitcases and almost dreaded leaving. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
