Horse lovers will enjoy the resort's equestrian facilities
Guests bemoan the property's poor service
This resort can be found about 46 miles west of Washington, D.C., in Middleburg, Virginia, but with its acres of rolling fields and relaxed atmosphere, it feels like it's worlds away from the hectic capital. Travelers love the colonial decor, complete with hardwood floors, plantation-style architecture and traditional design accents. Guest rooms are spacious and come equipped with flat-panel TVs, minibars and excellent views. Salamander Resort & Spa also features an expansive equestrian facility, allowing guests to test their horseback riding skills (for an additional fee). For something more relaxing, make an appointment at the Salamander Spa, which also houses an infinity pool and a fitness center. Lastly, finish off your day at Harrimans, which earns praise from guests for its locally sourced cuisine. Some caution, though, that service provided throughout the property is disappointing.

Critic Reviews

Surrounded by the beauty of Virginia's Horse Country, you'd be hard pressed to find a better locale for a luxury resort with an equestrian flair. Throughout the 168-room hotel, there’s a definite equine flavor; but it's the perfect balance between elegance and theme.

Rooms are spacious and bright, with equestrian-inspired decor, some of which was designed by resort owner Sheila Johnson. The Blue Ribbon Suite, on a corner, offers expansive views of the bucolic Virginia landscape and a stone terrace—the perfect perch for a glass of local wine.
