Buyer Beware - Tenderloin Neighborhood

Aug 21st, 2019

The hotel itself is beautifully designed. The food was really good. The staff was mostly friendly. This was marketed as the Mid-Market neighborhood on their website. This hotel is in the Tenderloin neighborhood, or the 9th circle of Hell. This is a great place to stay if you want to remind yourself of how horrible the world can be and the dangerous outcomes of taking your recreational drug use to a professional level. We were dropped of every night to a beautiful hotel in the middle of a tent city filled with unchecked mental illness and drug abuse. My kids think it's hilarious to reminisce about watching the show from the window of the crime going on outside every day and night. Our Uber drivers were nervous for us when dropping us off at night. One friendly guy digging through the trash outside the hotel entrance welcomed my kids one evening warmly by saying, "Hey kids, nice to see you guys again." They don't have a bank machine on site so be prepared to go out to get your cash in what is basically a scene from The Walking Dead. We were never robbed or assaulted so we had that going for us but we also were unable to take walks in the neighborhood where we stayed so it was constant Ubering to leave the location. Also, look for the gratuity to be included on your check. Some staff told us and some did not so we enjoyed double tipping unbeknownst to us. That's our fault for not reading the check thoroughly though. As far as the space goes, I was surprised to see how worn and almost dirty some of the lobby furniture was. The rooms were clean but the lobby furniture could use a refresh. Honestly, I think I'd rather wake up with my head stapled to the floor than to ever stay in this neighborhood again. Stay in SF

Great hotel, excellent team. Good kitchen. Room and hotel in general are very clean and staff is very attentive. I do recommend the hotel to anyone wanting to stay downtown, close to most centrally located attractions TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

More surface than substance

On first appearance WOW, but the longer I stayed the more it became apparent that the hotel guests appear to come secondary to the bar and restaurant customers. Hidden costs: $20 daily charge for amenities - whether you used them or not. Wifi is NOT FREE. The hotel did not make this clear when we checked in. When the bar and gym facilities are advertised as a USP, then I expect this to be inclusive of the room charge and not as an extra add-on expense. We booked via a bookings agent which does not communicate these charges via their platform - so be wary. Hotel breakfast is very overpriced, so opted to use local bakeries / cafes. The local area is indeed 'colourful' - a drug users pharmacy is located nearby. The addicts and hobos do not bother you, but if you feel nervous in these surroundings, this is not the place for you. In San Francisco to attend an event at Davies Symphony Hall. Was able to walk there.

I loved my room and all the fun art and patterns. All of the staff was delightfully pleasant. The bellman stood with me and chatted on the sidewalk until my ride arrived. Theresa was especially lovely and helpful. Guests in the hotel are escorted to the very popular rooftop bar. I will be back! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Poor welcome

Bad welcome at bar and breakfast. Dont take the advantage of your Marriot status. You need to book the day before table for breakfast ( continental at 25 usd for one croissant and one orange juice !!!) TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
