Historic and Unique

Jul 16th, 2019

The room was well appointed though the bathroom could have been laid out a bit differently to make use of the large space. They could have easily had a walk-in shower and tub given how big the bathroom was but that wasn't a huge deal. The lounge was wonderful with a nice breakfast that offered hot and cold options. In the evening they served hors d'oeuvres. The lobby is gorgeous and the staff was very attentive and enthusiastic but what really stuck out for us and made this place special was the museum on the 1st level. The hotel has been there for over 100 years and they have some really great pieces in the museum like the switchboard they used for routing calls. Throughout the hotel you'll see things like mail slots dating back a generations. The only knock is that housekeeping did not service our room. We left early each day and didn't not come back until way past lunch but the room was never touched. We called down were told that sometimes they don't get to each room and offered to send someone up. We didn't want to leave again or make someone clean while we stood there so we just asked for some clean towels which they quickly provided. For a hotel of this caliber I found that to be quite atypical. I can certainly understand it happening once but not sending housekeeping for three days seems unacceptable. It didn't ruin our stay though and if we go back to San Antonio we will definitely consider staying here again. The hotel was a big part of why we enjoyed our visit. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Bar 414 is AMAZING

Jun 29th, 2019

Rolando and Bert are the best bartenders in San Antonio. Whenever I come in to town I make a point to stop by Bar 414 for amazing drinks and sophisticated mixology. Make sure you ask for the cucumber mule, and enjoy this spectacular drinking experience! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Very nice hotel

Jun 29th, 2019

Stayed there a couple nights while we saw some of San Antonio. The hotel was clean and seemed to be well maintained even though built in early 1900's. Had a small problem with a sink knob that didn't function properly, mentioned it to a day manager as we were leaving for the day. He said it would be fixed before we returned. It was! Good job to the staff. Bed was comfortable and carpet clean. Nice place to stay TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Is this place safe

It feels like staying in Old Alfred Hitchcock movie in that the decor and building is from another time. A draconian staff, paper thin walls, very few amenities. The Residence Inn down the street is much nicer. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Music History in the heart of San Antonio!

Jun 8th, 2019

When I discovered the Robert Johnson SA sessions were recorded in the Gunter Hotel I booked the Room and Parlor that was used for the famous recording. The hotel has retained it's original charm, built in 1909, and even has a little museum area in the basement with the original switchboard. The Market on Houston serves a good breakfast at a reasonable,e price, and the 414 bar was a fun place to get a night cap after a show at the Majestic Theater, right across the street.
