How the mighty have fallen

Oct 9th, 2019

Built in the 80’s to a high standard of design, the Hotel Newfoundland was originally branded as a CN hotel, then Fairmont, today the property operates as under the Sheraton brand. Time has not been kind to the facility, management have allowed standards to fall and the facility to deteriorate - badly. There are minor renovations currently underway in corridors, however the neglect and deterioration of the facility and furniture is noticeable - everywhere. My comments are not about the redecorating underway (although a better approach would have been to shut down complete floors to do a major overhaul, instead of making guests walk though a redecorating work site), they are about what is not being renovated. Once iconic and the standard bearer for Hospitality in NL, today the Hotel Newfoundland is at best a 3.5 Star experience. Every hotel needs to renovate regularly to stay inviting and current; sadly the Sheraton St. John's has waited far too long and is only undertaking a minor refresh, when it should be going thorough a major makeover. Even the staff will comment on how the hotel has gone down hill; that is the ones old enough to remember the hotel in its glory days. My room, like the hotel in general, has good bones, however is run down. Scratches & scrapes on the furniture and fixtures, even the mattress is worn. It took two calls, to get someone to bring up a decent pillow (to replace the paper-thin chip foam pillows on the bed), the leather upholstered headboard above my head is badly damaged. I recall the Hotel Newfoundland as a memorable destination for modern elegance and professional hospitality, now it is another forgettable property operating under a brand that had lost its identity. Good location but using old school system

Oct 8th, 2019

Not sure if it is because of the merge between Marriott and SPG left quite a bit of loophole. Online and app request would not go thru the system. Which means whatever request you made (such as early check in, extra towel, etc), unless you call and speak to the actual person at the front desk, nothing would happen. Generally, it is a good location around St. John's area but don't expect the same service as you received at the State. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful hotel, great location overlooking the harbor. Just down the hill from the National Historic site Signal Hill. Downtown location, close to everything. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Clean and comfortable. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Lovely hotel and pleasant staff

Sep 29th, 2019

We stayed at the Sheraton St. John’s at the end of a Newfoundland tour and surely were glad to end the tour at such a nice property. The harbor location is great and we enjoyed a nice view from our room. It’s the nicest property in town. The breakfast buffet was ample or order from the menu. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful hotel

Beautiful hotel, convenient location. Staff are all very friendly and helpful. The restaurant the Bivver has delicious food and great service. Rooms are nice and clean. The location is great, close enough to downtown but far enough you don’t hear the noise. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
