Overview

Lots of activities are included in resort fee, including all cultural activities such as Lei making and hula lessons
Though the property is on the water, there is no beach access at the resort

Perched on the volcanic cliffs of Keauhou Bay on the western shores of the Big Island, the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa offers beautiful views and kid-friendly amenities. Teens can meet and greet at the Club Le'ale' lounge while younger kids can play in the sand-bottom children's pool. The whole family can take part in manta ray presentations (offered in the evenings Monday through Friday). For a little more excitement, bring the whole family to the Haleo Luau dinner and show, which takes place every Monday. Accommodations here are fairly standard in terms of decor, offering private balconies, flat-panel TVs and Sheraton's signature Sweet Sleeper beds. Though while some travelers weren't too wowed by the rooms, guests can earn or cash in points if they're a part of the Marriott Bonvoy club.

Those traveling with kids appreciate the pool, one of the coolest on the island, with a slide, waterfalls, and an ocean view. Culture vultures like the historic walking tour with the resort's cultural liaison. A luau, on a grassy lawn with a backdrop of coconut trees, features a live Polynesian show.

If you opt for an oceanfront room, request a view of the manta rays; after dark, spotlights illuminate the water so you can watch them swim.

The ... 509-room Sheraton may be lacking an on-site beach (it's a five-minute drive to the Kahaluu Beach Park), but prices are affordable and the south Kailua-Kona location is convenient.

Every night after sunset, a dinner-theater show happens just offshore Hawaii's Kona Coast. Microscopic plankton rise toward the ocean surface to set the scene. Charter companies bring underwater lights to illuminate the main dish and attract more. Onlookers adjust their masks, snorkels, and cameras then wait for the action. From out of the darkness, almost on cue, as many as 12 manta rays, some with wingspans of more than 15 feet wide, swoop in to feast on one of their favorites.
