Dissapointing

Nov 21st, 2019

I waited the best part of an hour for my room, despite an early check in request on my booking, though I was indeed grateful to be upgraded, in line with my Loyalty Status. Reception staff were initially efficient but somewhat aloof. My request for a room with a bath was ignored. I was quoted $79 per day valet parking if I wanted to bring my car when I emailed in advance.... strangely I decided not to. I didn’t see a Priority Check-in line at all, though there may have been one but regardless I was seen quickly. Sadly, it was my least favourite Sofitel check-in experience out of more than 10 stays with the brand around the world, this year alone. ‘Justin’ I believe his name was, from the Concierge Team, noticed me hanging about in the lobby for ages waiting for my room and no doubt looking rather forlorn and took the initiative himself, finally sorting it out for me and taking me up. Worth his weight in gold that one! Sorry, but no thanks at all to the preoccupied Reception team who were overall unsympathetic to my repeated queries. The room was stuffy when we entered, air-con not set correctly. Nice view but small room, well equipped with high quality finishes and amenities. Magnificent bed! The Sofitel trademark bedding didn’t disappoint. My very large TV didn’t work when I checked in. The Engineer arrived quickly though and relocated a sensor on the front that keeps getting dislodged by housekeeping. A common problem in the hotel apparently. Not a big deal. It is however very difficult to swivel it for viewing from the bed. A great coffee machine is supplied but needs to be taken into the bathroom to use. Not enough room for it on the bar and no easy access to power. Again, no biggie. The room was spotlessly clean. The Room Service menu is unimaginative, pricey and with limited choices. Noted I even got a $6 ‘Tray Charge’ on top of my Roof Service bill on checkout. Common area hotel facilities are mediocre and somewhat disappointing for a property of this calibre: small low floor pool with a nice view; a decent small well-equipped gym, again with a nice low floor view - but no steam room, sauna, jacuzzi or full dressing room facilities. Why there isn’t an open-air roof top bar on the very top floor of this hotel, I will never understand. I visited the Champagne Bar (on the 4th floor) with my 4 friends, it looks over nearby shopping centre roofs to the water. I recommended the hotel to them and two of them are currently staying ten nights there. When we arrived, I asked a staff member for an extra stool for our table, but he never bothered bringing it, (I didn’t just want to take one from another table in case it was reserved). Eventually though we had to just grab one ourselves. The same waiter deliberately then ignored a call over to our table to enable us to order. It took 30 minutes after we arrived to get the first drink delivered and the remaining 4 people’s drinks didn’t come for another 5 minutes. Unacceptable for any level establishment, disgraceful for one of this standard. Other waiters thankfully took over for subsequent orders and the service improved greatly. Maybe the one chap was just having a bad day but our overall experience was not a good one and we didn’t bother returning the following nights. Sofitel Darling Harbour is a monolith looming over the area, but its facilities including Restaurant, Bar and other amenities have not been proportionally considered to fully meet the demands and expectations of its occupancy. The bottom line I suppose is that the hotel is just too big and unwieldy. It therefor lacks a ‘soul’. The charm and warmth and character normally found in the great Sofitel’s is missing here. The restaurant feels more like a big cafeteria, with little atmosphere. The breakfast buffet selection was good, above that of many hotels but nowhere near the standard of selection and service of its sister hotels like the Sofitel Metropole Legend, Hanoi or Sofitel Sukhumvit, Bangkok et al. It also struggles to deal with the number of guests during high occupancy and cues are common. I guess I may have just gone in with too high expectations of this Australian ‘Flagship’ positioned Sofitel but it sadly failed to live up to those expectations or to justify its very high price tag. Fantastic Stay and Wine Tasting

Nov 21st, 2019

This has to be my favourite hotel in Sydney. I’m a platinum Accor member and you get absolutely spoiled by the staff and the benefits that you get at this hotel. I also got invited to a wine tasting hosted by Cao and Louiza which was fantastic! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

MISSING/STOLEN RING and awful attitude from staff.

Nov 20th, 2019

I stayed at this hotel for a conference that I was attending. I am very disappointed to say that when I checked out, I realized I left my ring in the hotel room. I called and asked them to collect it so I could come back and pick it up. But I was told nothing was there. I checked all my bags again and I remembered I left it on the table in the hotel room. I called back again begging them to hold it for me and they said it was "too late for me to be calling" and that they had no records of me calling previously (which shows the lack of professionalism and organization). I am beyond disgusted with their utter disrespect and rudeness. It was appalling. Just a friendly suggestion to be extra careful if you leave your items out or if you are leaving the hotel to check before you leave. It appears they have no regard for private property. Also, the hotel pillows were too soft and my head sunk in them. The aircorn couldn't be changed in my room, even if I tured the temperature up, it was still freezing cold - so turning it off was my only option. The mattress was not good. Honestly, the overall experience was bad and for a hotel that claims to be top star rating; is laughable. I truly believe they stole my personal property, I know for a fact they don't keep logs of who cleans rooms or who calls for lost property and they take absolutely ZERO responsibility for their staffs laziness and bad behavior. Great rooms but no thought for vegans

Nov 19th, 2019

My wife a d I stayed here recently. The hotel itself is fabulous, and our room (a corner suite) was very good. However... were both vegan and my wife has some food allergies and here the hotel failed. The breakfast buffet vegan options were limited and bland, the champagne bar had zero vegan options and likewise the pool. They also took no care with my wife’s food allergy, using cross contaminated utensils to cook food for her, causing her to become unwell. None of this is hard to fix, but I hope they do because otherwise its a great hotel. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful stay

Nov 18th, 2019

This was a beautiful stay in the city. Great location, superb staff, and delicious food. I will say however, it can be a little suffocating when too many staff approach you at the front desk. The room itself was beautiful, with daily refreshments and toiletries and house keeping. The bar has a lovely view and it is close to many restaurants and bars on the main strip of darling harbour. Amazing stay. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
