Overview

Charming, historical property makes for a unique stay
Elevator is slow and tiny, guests say
Soniat House is an idyllic choice for couples — the decor practically screams "rendezvous," with its four-poster beds (only available in some rooms), its French and Italian antique furniture and its candlelit courtyards. Each of the 30 rooms and suites has Frette linens and Molton Brown toiletries, plus free Wi-Fi access. The property wins favor with guests for its honor bar where guests can mix their own cocktails and the breakfast, which features fresh buttermilk biscuits and strawberry preserves, among other treats (for a fee). Plus, this hotel on Chartres Street is somewhat removed from the Big Easy hoopla. Travelers give kudos to the warm staff, but they also warn that if you're expecting convenient luxury, this may not be the NOLA home base for you. Recent guests say they flocked to The Soniat House Hotel knowing it would be more like an escape to the city's bygone era and therefore tolerated some of its flaws (no in-room coffee makers and a small, slow elevator) for the charming experience.

Step through the stone carriageway and into the Soniat House's serene courtyard, framed by Japanese magnolias and seasonal plant life, and you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. ... This isn't the hotel for noisy groups, bachelor parties, or families with small children: the serene nature of the property, close quarters, and the sheer number of valuables (art and antiques) make it more suited for couples or small groups.

The staff spoils guests; Frette linens cradle them; and the sweet courtyards, candlelit at night, soothe them.

Built into a cluster of three historic townhouses, the hotel presents like a bed-and-breakfast, with large, individually styled rooms full of antiques. All the rooms are spacious and comfortably furnished, though some may be more worn than others and walls are thin.
