Overview

Soniat House is an idyllic choice for couples — the decor practically screams "rendezvous," with its four-poster beds (only available in some rooms), its French and Italian antique furniture and its candlelit courtyards. Each of the 31 rooms and suites have Frette linens and Molton Brown toiletries; the free afternoon cocktails are pure class, and the breakfast served each morning (not free) is tasty. Plus, this hotel on Chartres Street is somewhat removed from the Big Easy hoopla. Travelers give kudos to the warm staff, but they also warn that if you're expecting convenient luxury, this may not be the NOLA home base for you. Recent guests say they flocked to the Soniat House knowing it would be more like an escape into the city's bygone era and therefore tolerated some of its flaws (no in-room coffee makers and a small, slow elevator) for the charming experience.

Exotic plants fill two charming courtyards, where afternoon cocktails and an outstanding homemade breakfast is served, weather permitting, and there's a quiet lounge with an honor bar.

You enter via a cool loggia into a courtyard filled with ferns, palmettos and a trickling fountain. Some rooms open up onto the courtyard, while winding stairways lead to the elegant upstairs quarters.

The staff spoils guests; Frette linens cradle them; and the sweet courtyards, candlelit at night, soothe them.

Built into a cluster of three historic townhouses, the hotel presents like a bed-and-breakfast, with large, individually styled rooms full of antiques. All the rooms are spacious and comfortably furnished, though some may be more worn than others and walls are thin.
