Incredible views
Recent guests bemoan the hotel's service
Sitting pretty in the small town of Sooke on the southern tip of Vancouver Island – about 25 miles southwest of Victoria – Sooke Harbour House Resort Hotel boasts pristine vistas of Whiffen Spit and the Olympic Mountains. For recent visitors, it was these spectacular landscapes that validated the high room rates. Along with the views, each of the hotel's 28 rooms is appointed with a private balcony, a stone fireplace, free Wi-Fi access and original artwork, but some travelers say some of the accoutrements border on kitsch and the accommodations could benefit from refurbishment. For more local handiwork and a sample of Sooke culture, check out the on-site art gallery. Views aside, the oceanfront restaurant is the real star of this hotel. Using ingredients sourced from the property's vast on-site garden and local suppliers, the restaurant boasts seasonal plates guests and critics gush over. While recent guests still give the restaurant stellar reviews, some seem to think the hotel's service is slipping.

Critic Reviews

Art, food, and gardens have always worked together seamlessly at one of Canada's best-loved small inns. But this internationally-acclaimed gem was looking a little dated on last visit. Some guest rooms, public spaces, and outdoor areas, while still eclectically decorated with quirky pieces from the owners' vast art collection, are in need of an update.

As Berkeley’s Chez Panisse was to California cuisine, so is Sooke Harbour House to the cuisine of Canada’s West Coast. Sinclair and Frederique Philip’s cozy, art-filled clapboard restaurant is one of the places that first tried to define what local and regional really is—and 35 years after it first opened, is still doing it better than everyone else.

Each room is uniquely designed and named—the Grandifolia has a wood sculpture of a tree by a local artist—with paintings and glasswork throughout. Some have wood-burning fireplaces or bathtubs for two.

The daily-changing menu is especially strong on seafood, be it a Dungeness crab soup or sweet Weathervane scallops served with sea asparagus and sorrel. The 15,000-bottle wine list is overseen by the inn’s charismatic owner, Sinclair Philip—who, along with Jernigan, helped start the island’s Slow Food movement.
