It's hard to determine what travelers enjoy more — the gourmet seafood or the first-rate service at this small Tortola hotel. And that's not surprising as this cottage-turned-hotel is owned and operated by renowned food and travel writers Jefferson and Jinx Morgan. The intimate dining room — complete with mood lighting and an innovative menu — wins over many of its patrons. However, there are a few things you should know before you book: Sugar Mill is located over Apple Bay, along the island's northeast coast and children ages 11 and younger are not permitted to stay at Sugar Mill during the peak season (December to April). Also, keep in mind that Sugar Mill is missing some of the accoutrements you'd find at other luxury properties, like spa treatments and TVs in every room. Despite lacking extravagance, these simplistic accommodations do come equipped with a kitchenette and private balcony overlooking the waterfront or tropical garden.

Lonely Planet

In a league of its own for ambience, intimacy and customer service, this boutique hotel rises from the ruins of the Appleby Plantation that gave Apple Bay its name. Guests stay in the 21 studios and suites that hide on the steep hillside among mahogany trees, bougainvillea and palms. The property’s centerpiece is its gourmet restaurant.

Built on a hillside sloping down the beach and nestled in grounds filled with vibrant tropical foliage and big fruit trees, the Sugar Mill has a natural serenity. It’s across the two-lane road from the sea, with not much of a beach to speak of (but spectacular bird action, as big-beaked pelicans plunge into the sea for silver bonito all day long). The contemporary accommodations vary in quality, but all are furnished with topnotch beds and linens; the tight quarters of the pool suites (with one king bed and a sleeper couch) are balanced by nice terraces, big stone outdoor showers, and the evening lullaby of tree frogs.

Travel + Leisure

Built in 1640 as an oxen-powered rum distillery, the historic cottage colony has all the thoughtful touches of a traditional Caribbean inn—island-inspired watercolors hand-painted by Jinx herself, lush tropical gardens, and 23 ocean-view rooms with balconies and kitchenettes—plus plenty more that most hotels don’t have. Namely, an über-romantic restaurant, housed in a candlelit stone building where rum was once boiled, and a small private beach known for some of the best snorkeling and surfing on Tortola.

The famous Sugar Mill Restaurant has been serving romantic dinners in the property’s nearly 400-year-old stone sugar mill for decades. The stone surroundings and garden scenery pair well with the candlelit atmosphere and menu of fine dishes such as lobster bisque with basil croutons, leek-wrapped salmon with petit pois emulsion and oyster gratin with smoked bacon. In addition to this dinner spot with its rotating menu, the other dining options include the outdoor Bar & Terrace for breakfast and sunset cocktails and the Islands Beach Restaurant, where lunch is served and dishes such as salt fish fritters, burgers and jerked baby back ribs are offered.
