Great location but then......

We've been visiting Cozumel for years to scuba and the south end is definitely the best place to stay for proximity to the divesites. So that where Sunscape scores. In addition, many of the rooms are oceanfront or ocean view, score two. Unfortunately that's where it ends. The resort is old and tired and in dire need of a major makeover. In the week that we stayed the airconditioning broke down, the toilet never stopped flushing (we had to ask two days in a row to get it fixed), we got locked inside the bathroom (failing lock) as well as outside the room (battery of doorlock ran out). There are various critters on the grounds, some entertaining - iguanas - some not so much: roaches, musquitos (definitely bring deet) and ants, crawling over the bathroom counter and worse: in your bed. Than the food.... We stayed in low season which means that out of the four restaurants at least one is closed. That's wouldn't be so bad if the food in the remaining restaurants is great. It's not. The main buffet restaurant has the same food every day. We've had raw fried chicken (how is that even possible?), cardboard pizza, no french fries because the fryer was broken, no cappuccino because the coffee machine is broken. And yes the timeshare people are chasing you. Actually that was a plus for us: we set the timer for 90 minutes and walked away with $300 towards the cost for scuba diving. So maybe I should have given 3 stars. But no, we won't be coming back. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Could be great if there was more attention to the basic but important details

Nice beach area, great main restaurant for dinner, El Patio, authentic local pan-Mexican gourmet style cuisine (with wonderful staff) and large suite rooms. However, upon check in, they need to explain more about the site-give a short 10-15 tour. Also there were issues with the room upon check in. Canned beverages in the mini-fridge were not cold. One of the 2 A/C mini-splits was not working. And the hot tub was disconnected. There needs to be a check in list for housekeeping. Finally, room service for restocking the mini-fridge was terrible. I can't recall how many times I called for this and they said they would come shortly and then they never came. And the kicker is there is no free wifi. I understand this is not a business hotel but I was here for solo diving and still had to do some work online. Management finally relented and gave me a log in pass but it was almost useless-the wifi didn't always connect and the connection came up as weak almost all of the time. This place is a great value (and their beach area is so much between then their more upscale, pricier sister resort next door, Secrets) but overall the service is lacking-typically second world slackness and lack of attention to detail. Finally, the embedded dive co., the Dive House, was terrible. Overpriced and rude. At Secrets, just 500 yds. away, their dive shop was engaging and 15% cheaper for the same services-how does that happen?! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful Property!

As others have said, DO NOT fall for the sales pitch. Your “90 minute” sales presentation will take several hours, ours took almost 6 hours and they were misleading on the costs. Our room was always clean, however, the “peek” hole in the door was missing and you could stick your finger right in there because there was nothing there but a round hole in our door and you could see right into our bathroom. The staff are overall very friendly and did their best for being so overworked because the place needs to hire more people! The food could be improved. The omelettes were delicious! The beach and property are gorgeous. There were tons of sea life in the water right outside the resort. At dusk one evening, we saw either 2 small dolphins or 2 small sharks feeding approximately 10 feet from the shore. We saw more wildlife at this resort than we have ever seen staying anywhere else in Cozumel and Cancún. We saw a small Ocelot on the property, as well. Small Hermit-type crabs, tons of lizards, birds, fish, stingrays, conchs, a star fish.. amazing! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Pleasant vacation but avoid the timeshare pitch

Overall, Sunscape provides a pleasant vacation for the price. The grounds are beautiful and the staff is welcoming and friendly. Our room needed updates and the bed was extra firm, but it was clean. The a/c dripped condensation continuously down the wall but it worked well to cool the room. Housekeeping did a nice job but we did have to request it one evening after they were a no-show. We were disappointed in the service on one occasion. After spending a full day in bed from severe stomach issues, we contacted the front desk to ask that a bucket of ice be brought to our room and were told they did not offer that service. The beach is beautiful and kept in pristine condition. The beachside bars offer a variety of drinks and the bartenders are friendly. Food choices are limited. There is one restaurant that offers a buffet for all three meals, a beachside grill type restaurant for lunch and dinner, and a Mexican restaurant open for dinner only. Do be aware this is a timeshare (which we did not know). After stepping out of the taxi upon our arrival, we were hurried to a table by a salesman who tried to commit us to attend a breakfast with a sales person. After not showing the next morning, he called our room. Once we firmly declined, he finally got the message. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Our annual trip to Cozumel

Nice room, Cold A/C, gorgeous beach, great staff. I have a restricted diet of no gluten, dairy, or eggs, which made meals very complicated for me, as I had to bring along some of my own foods. It was quite a challenge, but the resort did offer some gluten free choices. Many of the employees deserve special recognition. Alfredo, who blended my protein smoothies every morning at the breakfast buffet. Lourdes, in the lobby bar, who steamed my special almond milk creamer for Cappuccinos each morning. Gloria, the super friendly hostess at the buffet, and Miguel, our waiter at the Mexican resturant, who went out of his way to make sure my food was gluten free. Some improvements as far as food, in my opinion, would be to offer another milk alternative besides dairy and soy. Perhaps almond or coconut milk. Also, even though a gluten-free rice pasta was offered, it would be great if they could have had a vegan option such as spiralized zucchini at the Italian restaurant. All in all, great vacation, pristine Beach with excellent off shore snorkeling, and friendly, helpful staff. Our room was a junior suite, which offered a closed-off bedroom from a quaint living and dining area, as well as a little kitchen nook with fridge and microwave and coffee maker and breakfast bar. Our balcony was very spacious and had a hot tub, although we did not take advantage of it. Since it was low season, the restaurant choices for dinner or a bit lacking, but we always managed to find something that we could eat. The pools were large, and not crowded at all, and getting a beach chair everyday was no problem. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
