Great Location, Dirty Room

Feb 9th, 2020

The room itself was quite nice nice, it was spacious and had all the amenities one looks for in a hotel room. However, the cleanliness of the room was serious lacking and very disappointing. When we got up in the morning looking to enjoy a nice cup of coffee we were unfortunate enough to discover the lids for our coffee cups had been used! You could see the kips and nose marks of the previous tenant and the two kids were glued together by sticky old coffee. Quite a disgusting find that unfortunately didn’t stop there. We soon discovered a used Kleenex that fell out of the foot of the bed we had just slept in. A Kleenex that did not come from any of us, but the hits didn’t stop there. In the bathroom we also discovered some toenails on the floor that had not been swept away after the previous occupants. We were quite reasonable and understood this sort of thing can happen as human error is a common occurrence. We informed the checkout desk in a polite way. Surprisingly we were not offered any sort of discount for the experience which to me seems to be something that should be pretty standard in hospitality for someone who just slept with someone else’s used tissue. Great Hotel, and Location

Feb 6th, 2020

Stayed at The Graduate for a work conference. The hotel was great. Had a great atmosphere and décor. The room was very nice and clean. The bed was very comfortable. I did not deal with the hotel staff really other than checking in and out, and conference lunches. I would say they were friendly, but not overly friendly or helpful. The food that was provided by them for our conference was really good. The bar by the lobby, The Beacon, overall was terrible, I will write a separate review for that! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Most comfortable bed ever!

Jan 26th, 2020

We always stay here when we visit our daughter at school. Great hotel. Most wonderful sleep ever in a hotel. Very comfortable. Only complaint was a mix of customer service experiences. Most were very good as usual. However, we stayed 2 nights and housekeeping was a little so so with the room pickup. Bed pillows left on the floor (I thought that was weird). Front desk person in the morning seemed annoyed everytime you asked him something. These were not horrible things but just what I noted that was subpar. Otherwise, we had totally different customer service. For example we were updated to a king on the 8th floor for no additional charge. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great decor. Terrible hosptiality.

Jan 19th, 2020

I don't like writing negative reviews and I usually try to keep my mouth shut unless I have something nice to say. I live in Minneapolis and booked my room for the weekend to have a relaxing break from momming my three young littles at home and was looking forward to peace and quiet. I paid extra for an 8th floor king room to avoid noise from the floor above (if in a lower floor room) and for the extra privacy. I brought some books, intended on napping and getting some work finished before the start of the spring semester (I work at UMN, too). I'll start with the positives: Quaint, kitschy decor; clean rooms; nice large windows on the 8th floor that could open for fresh air. Lovely soaps, shampoos and a comfortable bed with a range of pillows to suit everyone (firm-soft). However, when I checked in, although I requested a quiet room on the 8th floor, the room I was given by Josh (who seemed annoyed of my request for a quiet room) gave me room 804. This room was literally three feet opposite three large guest elevators and I could hear the "ding" and floor announcement clearly from the back wall of the room. I returned to the front desk to request another room on the 8th floor and was kindly given an alternative by a different front desk staff. Room 832, my new room, had a loud "hand-dryer" sound that was going off every five minutes. I assume it was something with the HVAC system and I tried to ignore it through the first night of my stay. In the morning, I couldn't bear the loud noise kicking on and off every few seconds, so went down to request a new room (again). Josh was reluctant to give me a new room and wanted the engineer to take a look at room 832 instead. After I explained that the noise seemed permanent--like part of the HVAC system, Josh finally agreed to place me in a new room. I arrived to my new room about halfway through my stay and it was quieter. Whew. During that interaction with Josh at the front desk, he took phone calls from other guests while talking with me and was rude to the guests about their requests for late check outs. He rolled his eyes while on the phone with these guests, made snide comments to the other front desk worker about guests waiting until 11:00 to call for a late check out and he abruptly denied the very last caller's request with no explanation "Sorry--no late check outs" (slam of the phone). I was surprised by his lack of hospitality and frankly, his hostility toward these guests. It made me hope that I had no reason to have more interactions with him during the rest of my stay. I woke up early (7 a.m.) on the final morning of my stay and called down to request a late check out myself. I spoke with Josh who hurriedly told me "The latest is 12:00 o'clock" before abruptly ending my call. I went back to sleep and was surprised to hear a knock on my door at 10:02 from housekeeping. I immediately went to the door but the housekeeper had already opened my door and looked surprised to see me still in the room. I told her I requested a late check out for noon. Literally 15 minutes later, another knock on the door from a different housekeeper where the same scenario ensued. Told her I requested a late check out. She said the front desk had not informed her of this. Regular check out time is 11, so I was doubly surprised to have two different housekeepers enter my room before that time--not mention with the extension until noon I thought the front desk noted. So, it's 11:19 now and I'm getting the heck outta here before another person knocks to shoo me out. I stay in a lot of hotels for various reason: work, leisure, rest and this was by far my least enjoyable stay in the Minneapolis area. I'll definitely be planning my next "restful" weekend at a friendlier hotel that is more conscientious of guests' requests. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Mariucci Classic Weekend

Jan 18th, 2020

It is a specific, Univ. of Minn., themed hotel, which is a nice touch. Our room was themed after a famous hockey coach with memorabilia from him. The room keys, at random, depict a notable U of M athlete, coach, etc. with the years they attended the U of M. Ours depicted Bud Grant and Herb Brooks. There is valet parking. Now for the craziness. Check-in time is 3:00 PM. The weekend was a popular hockey tournament and Graduate is a very nice location. When I got to the check-in area the line was about 12 deep with more coming behind me. Although there were about 6 clerk stations there was only ONE clerk checking people in! After about 15-20 minutes two more finally came out of a side room - and the first one left for break!! The line by this time was 30-40 deep! The busiest time and the clerks go on break! At checkout, 11:00 AM, there was ONE valet who had to go a couple hundred yards to a lot for each persons car. It took 5-10 minutes per car. Again the line was 15-20 deep. We were number four and it took us well over a half hour to get our car. Right at the time we got to the valet stand the manager did come to help. The good part of the staff; they were very polite, thoughtful and helpful. It sounds a little strange that they were so unhelpful by not staying to check people in, etc. but when they did work they were very good. The hotel is located fairly central to athletic venues as well as eateries and some shopping. Thus it is quite convenient for the U of Mn. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
