I wondered what to call

Jun 26th, 2019

this place. It is exactly a bed and breakfast inn. A very big bed and breakfast place. We were there for a recent wedding event. It is well appointed, and the staff is very competent. They have an extensive breakfast, but otherwise do not have a dining area. They do however cater events. We had a rehersal dinner there and the setting and the meal were fantastic. This is one of the homes owned at one time by James Duke a robber baron of prerolled cigararttes. It is set in a quiet neighborhood of large and stately homes. My favorite part of the grounds was the large and beautiful garden that surrounds the house. It seemed to be handicapped friendly, but you do have to enter through the kitchen. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Interesting check in !

Jun 6th, 2019

Lovely gardens, however, they seem more interested in outside functions than guests. Upon checking in, specified 3:00 pm, we had to wait for the front desk to be assembled and computer setup, due to a wedding the day before along with being told that the floor in our room was still wet! Seriously? Do not book room 202, unless you bring a can of WD40. The armoire was so noisy we didn't want to open it to remove our clothes daily. Would not recommend. Breakfast was plentiful but is advertised as being served, which is not the case. Buffet. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Second visit even better than the first

Apr 18th, 2019

We visited the Duke mansion some years back, in a late fall, just a day or two before a killing frost, so we did not see the mansion's garden to best advantage. This time we did -- camellias, tulips, redbuds, dogwood -- spring at its best. And meticulously maintained. Best of all, we could see the garden (or part of it) from a second-floor screened-in porch. Very cozy, southern charm, wonderful service

Apr 16th, 2019

My fiancée and I had a staycation in Charlotte, wanted some time for ourselves before our wedding, we stayed in the Dowd Suite with the porch, the room is hands down one of the most magnificent we've stayed at. My fiancée loves the free standing bathtub. The porch was very nice, there's a beautiful garden that it overlooks, we had our breakfast there. And the service was amazing, the staff brought us complimentary wine and champagne during our stay. My soon-to-be wife and I are definitely coming back when we need to get away from the daily grind. Stepping back in time!

The Duke Mansion is a must stay when in the Charlotte area. It is a wonderful B&B to stay in that is nestled in a quiet neighborhood. The gardens and surrounding areas are just beautiful and perfect for a morning or afternoon stroll. The rooms are comfortable and the service is top notch!! The breakfast buffet is not to be missed!! Great and fresh southern style food. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. The bed was very comfortable, with down pillows. There is always coffee and refreshments available for guests. We stayed on the 3rd floor and found a hidden stairway to get us to the 2nd floor to the refreshments which was a fun find!!! Be sure to read about the history and the families that lived and restored this wonderful mansion. We will definitely stay again when we visit Charlotte. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
