Overview

Travelers praise property's gardens and boutique atmosphere
Lunches and dinners are not served on-site
As its name suggests, The Gardens Hotel Key West's lush grounds are the focal point of this historic boutique hotel. Offering up a feeling of seclusion, the gardens (along with the property's smaller size) ensure you can relax and enjoy Key West, Florida's island lifestyle. (The quaint pool and aviary certainly help, too.) The Gardens Hotel is just two blocks away from Key West's lively Duval Street and sits within a mile of must-see sites like Mallory Square, the Southernmost Point and the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Just make sure to grab a bite while out exploring. Even though the hotel offers drinks, lighter fare and complimentary breakfast – which is excellent, according to previous guests – at its on-site pool bar and wine gallery, it does not offer full meals for lunch and dinner. Once you're ready for a little R&R, retreat to one of 20 guest rooms. Featuring plantation-style furnishings and hardwood floors, all of The Garden Hotel's accommodations boast Keurig coffee makers, flat-screen TVs and balconies, decks or verandahs, among other amenities. And for the ultimate luxury, consider reserving one of four Garden Cottages; removed from the main house, these lodging options offer more square footage and share a private pool. Other options include an additional cottage set in a secluded part of the property and a suite with a private sauna.

Since 2004, innkeeper Kate Miano has polished this gem to a high gloss with friendly, personalized service and a handful of imaginative innovations such as Sunday afternoon jazz concerts and the 'd’vine Wine Gallery,' a fancy automat allowing folks to sample a variety of interesting international vintages by the partial and full glass (both, by the way, are also open to the general public). Great expanded breakfast service, too (sticky thumbs-up to that luscious Key lime French toast).

Built in 1875, this gloriously shaded, award-winning property was a labor of love from the get-go, and it covers a third of a city block in Old Town. Winding brick pathways lead past rare orchids, ponytail palms, black bamboo, fountains, a gazebo, and earthenware jars (called 'tinajones') imported from Cuba that weigh a ton each.

Would we be stating the obvious if we mentioned this place has really nice gardens? In fact, the rooms are located in the Peggy Mills Botanical Gardens, which is a longish way of saying 'tropical paradise.'

Somewhere between a classic B&B and thoroughly modern boutique hotel is the Gardens Hotel, an 1870 plantation-style mansion-turned-luxury accommodation in the heart of Key West. Over the past 90 or so years, a handful of different owners have added their own personal stamp to the place – most notably Peggy Mills, who bought the property in 1930 with the goal of turning it into a botanical garden.

Location & Parking

Located in the center of Key West, Florida’s Old Town and two blocks away from Duval Street, The Gardens Hotel sits in the middle of a botanical garden that features the country's only authentic tinajones, four one-ton clay jars from Cuba that were used by early Spanish settlers to capture rainwater. The original mansion, built in 1875 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was occupied by Peggy Mills – the creator of the botanical garden – until 1992, when new owners renovated the original structures and added two Bahamian-style manor houses for additional guest rooms. The boutique hotel, named "The Prettiest Hotel in Key West" by The New York Times and the most romantic by several publications, is within walking distance of the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum and Old Town’s shops and restaurants.
