Overview

Property has unique amenities like a food truck and a cigar lounge
Some past guests wished there were more dining options on-site

Visitors of The Gates Hotel cannot stop raving about this recent addition to Florida's southernmost city. The hotel, which opened in April 2015, gives its guests access to several island-themed amenities, including the Rum Row Poolside Bar, a cigar lounge and an on-site food truck. Those looking to get off the property can rent bikes (for a fee) and venture over to Mallory Square or to Duval Street, where many of Key West's bars, restaurants, shops and drag queen nightclubs are located. Previous visitors suggest grabbing a bite while exploring off the property since the hotel's only on-site dining option, The Blind Pig food truck, (while good) can get old after a few days. The Gates Hotel also provides travelers with eco-friendly accommodations that feature reclaimed whitewashed beams and pine beds and include amenities like Key West Aloe bath essentials, Keurig coffee makers, minifridges and flat-screen LCD TVs. Keep in mind, The Gates Hotel charges a $34 daily resort fee, which covers in-room internet, parking, shuttle service to downtown Key West and a cocktail at check-in.

The hotel is a midcentury-esque sprawl located just steps from the Gulf of Mexico. Cuba was the primary inspiration, a theme that plays out everywhere from the room decor (think whitewashed walls, weathered leather, and pops of aquamarine and burnt orange) to the weekly Cuban pig roasts.

Dining

The Gates Hotel does not have a traditional restaurant; instead, the property has a food truck called The Blind Pig, which is located in the pool area. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the truck serves tapas-style fare with a “conch cuisine" twist, which incorporates elements from Caribbean, Cuban and Florida cuisine. Signature items include tacos, ceviche, fresh local fish dishes and Cuban-inspired breakfast sandwiches, as well as snacks like truffle popcorn. Also located by the pool, the Rum Row Poolside Bar – a partnership with First Legal Rum Distillery – pays homage to the days of prohibition with its specialty rums and signature cocktails. Rodriguez cigars, hand-rolled at the oldest cigar factory in Key West, are also sold at Rum Row for guests to enjoy in the cigar garden.
  • Guests must be 21 or older to enter the bar and lounge
  • The Blind Pig open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
