Feels like home!

Feb 6th, 2020

Staying at The Greenwich is honestly one of the best experiences in New York. Our absolute favourite hotel, full of atmosphere but feels like a home away from home. Each room is different, quite spacious and beautifully decorated - with stunning carrara marble bathrooms - and one of the best hotel showers we've experienced! The major bonus is the guests-only drawing room, where you can sit for hours and enjoy the full Locanda Verde menu or a hot chocolate. The staff are friendly and professional. The front desk staff have great recommendations, and no request is too hard. The gym, pool and spa are excellent. This is a special hotel. Cant wait to return! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Not in Greenwich Village! Fairly high quality hotel

Feb 2nd, 2020

This hotel is a large but friendly place. It is the Greenwich because it is on Greenwich Avenue rather than in Greenwich Village. However it is walking distance from there and Soho and is in a pleasant mixed area - we enjoyed walking around. Pleasant courtyard area for breakfast. Reasonable choice for breakfast - but a case of ordering from a menu rather than a buffet. Large and well-decorated room with generous free food and drink in minibar. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Disappointing, especially for the price

Jan 31st, 2020

I was so looking forward to my stay here - loved the look of the design, that it offers luxury without formality, the guest-only areas with the fireplace indoors and the courtyard outside, the Italian restaurant... Had the room cost half of what it did, I wouldn’t have found it such a disappointment. For a 5-star hotel with an entry-level room costing around $750, I expect things to be absolutely fantastic. The room: I was in room 712, a King room with no bathtub. Very small and very dark, poor soundproofing, the flimsy shower curtain didn’t quite fit the shower so the floor around the shower got wet, the shower knob came off in my hand as soon as I turned it on, and - the worst part - the bed linens smelled terrible. They looked clean and pressed, but the chemical smell was very bad. Have never experienced anything like this before. There was nowhere to sit on the guest-only lounge (not anyone’s fault, obviously) but I didn’t want to sit in the loud restaurant or in the other very dark lounge so I took my chance with a table outside under a heat lamp. The courtyard looks like it’s amazing in the summer, but it turns out that dinner there in the winter is not. This is a missed opportunity - create some more ambiance so it’s not so grim! Make it a bit more cozy. More candles. Something! It was cold and dark and I ate dinner as quickly as possible and then squeezed in a seating area inside. I also had breakfast in the drawing room and - a note about clientele which hopefully is not a reflection on the people who normally stay there - breakfast was ruined by the middle-aged couple making out on one of the sofas. Loudly. Smacking, slurping, sucking. It went on and on in this quiet room where everyone was having their morning coffee. I couldn’t believe it. Incredibly trashy. Food was delicious, staff were very kind. I appreciate the guest-only areas that were quieter than Locanda Verde. I didn’t go to the spa on this visit but I’ve been on two other occasions. One visit was absolutely amazing (loved the yukata robes, the masseuse was incredible), the next time was NOT good (they had run out of yukata robes, the masseuse was bad) so it seems hit and miss. What a letdown!

Dec 31st, 2019

We had really been looking forward to staying here and had high expectations for a comfortable and luxurious, high quality top-end boutique hotel. We ended up checking out after our first night as expectations and the reality were poles apart. That said, the staff were absolutely amazing in their understanding and flexibility around the situation which was truly hugely appreciated. This can-do, customer centric attitude is a real credit to the hotel and its management and why I have given a 4 star rating when pretty much everything else was sub-par. So, where did it all go wrong? The hotel does not have dedicated concierges, probably as it's relatively small so the front desk staff double up to fulfil this function. Prior to our arrival, I'd asked for some specific restaurants to be booked and most of these reservations were made, however, I was given misinformation about a couple of them. For instance, I was told that a particular restaurant was fully booked, yet when I looked online I could - and indeed did - book it myself. I informed them of this and that I'd booked it myself yet there was no apology. At this price point, a concierge service is meant to be saving me the time in having to book restaurants etc. Check-in was very efficient and we received a complimentary upgrade which is always an extra nice way to begin one's stay. We were shown to the lift but not to our room which was a little odd as usually I'd expect to be taken to the room or not taken anywhere. The corridor leading to the room was extremely dimly lit, and the absence of any remotely bright light seems to be a design feature throughout this property. The room itself was somewhat spartan. Like the corridor, the lighting levels were very dim, even with every single possible lamp switched on. Bizarrely there is a dimmer switch so you can choose lighting levels between dim and dark. Even the bedside reading lights weren't particularly bright. I understand that one doesn't always want full floodlighting, but the option to have a little brightness surely can't be such a bad thing! The room had no second door and soundproofing between other rooms and the corridor was not great. I could hear doors being shut, one neighbour returning late at night and I could hear the other neighbour using the hairdryer. In this sort of property at this price point I'd expect a room free of internal noise to be a given. There was very limited wardrobe space. Of course this isn't a problem if you're only staying a night or two, but we'd booked 5 nights and in the winter after hanging a few heavy coats there wasn't exactly a great deal of space left for anything else to hang. The heating/aircon fan was loud even on the lowest fan speed. In a relatively recently refurbished property I'm surprised that the best equipment wasn't chosen as nowadays fans are almost inaudible. It was so loud each time that it cut in that I ended up sleeping without any heating on (fortunately the winter has been a relatively mild one). I'm not sure if it was just this particular unit that had issues, but either way to have to choose between the desired temperature and acceptable noise levels is clearly not a choice that one should have to make at this level of property. The bathroom was on the compact side so didn't really allow for two people to comfortably use it simultaneously. The walk-in shower was relatively large although it had an ultra basic white shower curtain which, whatever way you look at it, just feels cheap and decidedly un-luxe. The very high quality toiletries and selection of extra items such a vitamin booster were a nice touch. The bed itself was vast and very comfortable, although the linens were not top quality and I'd question why the undersheet only covered the mattress topper rather than the entire mattress. The room includes LOTS of snacks ranging from trashy candy to artisan bakes which was a really great touch, and similarly all of the minibar - other than alcoholic drinks - was included too. This is really generous and very much appreciated as there is nothing more irritating than paying a high room rate and then seeing a $5 charge for a minibar drink, so top marks to The Greenwich for their approach to this. The room was a very comfortable size although it felt as if the space could have been put to better use both in terms of bedroom:bathroom size ratio and there was a big dark corner which was basically dead space. The room didn't have any paintings which was a little odd as the style was not minimalist so the walls felt bare. There were however a few knickknacks - still with their "made in China" labels affixed to their underside - dotted around. These just felt like a cheap afterthought rather than doing anything to genuinely enhance the space. Housekeeping deserve a special mention as the room was absolutely spotless and their attention to detail is clearly very strong so top marks here. All in all the room was a major fail from a purely practical perspective as it was dark, lacked storage space and had a cramped, and very basic bathroom. It was also a fail from a more aesthetic perspective. What was strong was the "soft" aspect of the product such as the F&B and toiletries and this is where it really outshone almost every other property that I've ever stayed at. However, for me this cannot compensate for fundamental failings in the basics. The supposed charm of the rest of the property was clearly lost on me. The swimming pool area had a very strong smell of chlorine which I didn't find pleasant and like the rest of the property was so dark that one would struggle to read a book or newspaper (perhaps everyone else uses tablets for this these days so it's not an issue). The imported Japanese dark wood beams all felt a bit "theme-parky" for me, but I appreciate that this is down to my personal taste. There was some very nice tasting tea and other beverages provided which were a thoughtful touch. However, after 10 minutes of sitting by the pool we'd had enough and left. The guest lounge area was another very dimly lit space. The open fire was very pleasant and provided some much needed warmth. The decor of this room was again dark and heavy and we spent very little time here. The breakfast on the covered terrace was truly awful. An allowance for breakfast was included as a perk for Leaders Club members, but the quality of the food was very poor. A frittata lacked any seasoning at all and was rubbery, toast had spent too little time next to the grill, and the crispy potatoes were indeed crispy on the outside but a touch undercooked in the middle. Prices are top dollar even though you'd get tastier food in pretty much any diner. Perhaps we caught the kitchen on an off day, but at this level of property, the F&B offering needs to be strong. This was not a case of personal taste, it was simply bad cooking. Perhaps if you book a suite which would have more space and more comforts then you'd have a totally different experience, but in the best hotels even if you book the most basic room you shouldn't have a third class experience. Upon checking out early at around 10am the next morning - when the receptionist knew full well that I was leaving 4 nights early - I was asked "how was your stay?" ...that aside, again I must highlight how much I appreciated the hotel's flexibility in not penalising me for leaving early which was a generous and courteous attitude and says a lot of positive things about their approach. Reading the other reviews here, either people have lower standards than me and/or have not experienced the best properties and/or do not consider whether the product that they are receiving is commensurate to the price that they are paying. My experience was not the result of one or two mishaps - which can of course happen anywhere - nor was it purely a matter of personal taste, it was largely driven by the inferior hard product.
