Hotel needs some work. Food was fair.

Mar 19th, 2020

Deadbolt on door did not work. Light over toilet had no bulb. Found an unopened can of Cherry Coke under the dresser. Had to ask for a refrigerator three times. Food was fair at best. They ran out of spaghetti for the Rotary event I attended. I had requested foam pillows in my proflie, only to find three feather pillows in the room upon arrival. I had to request foam pillows again. Loose shower control in the bathroom. The facility is under some renovation. For the price paid it is not worth it. We enjoyed the tour of the Homestead. So Relaxing

The homestead has so much history with the spa and just the hotel part. I love all the pictures hanging throughout and the captions telling us where and when and who they are. So very rich in history. The spa is so relaxing and the many different ways to get spoiled make it a very memorable experience. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Nice historic resort

My family had a wonderful stay at The Homestead this spring. The grounds and hotel are beautiful. The staff throughout the facility were friendly and accomodating. Our dinner meal was tasty and our entire family loved the breakfast. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

They cancel what they advertise and charge full price

The website looked great. My kids wanted to use the zip line, the ice skating rink, to go horseback riding, to sink into the hot springs and to enjoy the stores hour. We went on Spring break and were able to do NONE OF THE ABOVE. First, as soon as I entered into the lobby, after an almost 5 hour drive in deserted mountain roads, I wanted to turn around and leave. Why? The decor is a cross between a cheap version of the White House and a funeral parlor. There are square kilometers of worn green rugs, shelves with these crypt looking receptacles, and oversized green armchairs. It is not grandeur. Just too much bad green fabric. Secondly, and more importantly, here is how I was MISGUIDED: We look at all these fun things to do with my kids, we get excited, we reserve, and along with an email with their strict cancelation policy, we are put in touch with an "activity coordinator" who in an overly polite voice proceeds to tell you what you can and can't do. Then you start figuring out the following: SMORES are only for weekends. My daughter is too small for any kind of horse experience (she is 8 years old). The skating rink is closed for the year. The outdoor heated pool is not in service. But we haven't lost all hope yet. I try to reserve the ZIP LINE for my son. He is told it is out of the question. (The website does not say it is NOT in SERVICE) We are resigned to sign up for the 100 dollar "hike" through waterfalls. This ends up being a 5 minute van ride and a very light hike inside hotel property with some waterfalls. BUT THEY CHARGE 100 FOR BEING IN THE LAND!! Wasn't I already paying for being in the hotel? A colorful guide tells a couple of bizarre stories involving snakes, identifies wild chives (who isn't able to see these?), we end up in a golf course, the van shows up and THAT JUST COST 100 DOLLARS. And then, there is dinner time. NO KID FRIENDLY OPTIONS. ZERO. Every meal cost me 100 dollars while having to subject two kids to eat AT A BAR! So I was misguided by this hotel, and locked into a reservation. Charged twice for being "on the land" and all that my kids were excited about was NOT AVAILABLE. When I expressed my disappointment I was politely told nothing could be done except taking a gratuity off. I am beyond disappointed by having been misled by this horrible hotel. I wasted close to 1000 dollars on this misadventure. SPARE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful and Magical

This is a wonderful getaway in the mountains of VA - luxury at it's finest. The restaurants are wonderful, the complimentary wine given to us by the concierge was an added touch. Lots of outdoor areas and the pool is amazing. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
