Definitely NOT a luxury collection...

...Marriott/SPG Hotel. Staff were ok, but the hotel is so old and run down. . The rooms stink of smoke and amenities are inferior. The gym and it’s machines were faulty. The exec lounge had poor food and small selection. I could see how 20 years ago this was a good hotel, but the world has moved on. Avoid at all costs TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Be Aware of What you are Ordering

Jul 24th, 2019

watered down liquor at the front lobby bar. The management does not mention that for elite travelers there is an Executive Lounge upstairs. The hotel is pretty tired and in two of the rooms I stayed at on two separate occasions the rugs are stained and need to be stretched again. On the upside the restaurant breakfast staff was good, on the downside ordering dinner downstairs took forever to get a roasted chicken with 5 halves of small potatoes.Glad I was not too hungry TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

I give it a 4.5 but rounding up to 5

Pros/Likes - Fast check-out - Great room with nice bedding and large bathroom with great amenities - Plate with fruit was waiting in the room - Turn-down service with chocolates on the pillows - Complimentary bottles of water daily - Location was great with restaurants nearby and a 10-minute walk to the metro station - We could see Shanghai Tower, second tallest in the world, from our room - Building looked modern and beautiful - Great Chinese restaurant though expensive - Wonderful breakfast buffet: we were told at check-in it ended at 10:30am but that's weekends only; on weekdays it ends at 10:00am; the day we had breakfast we arrived at 9:50am and we still got time to try most everything, including great pancakes and omelettes - Complimentary shoe-shine service - Staff were very nice Cons/Dislikes - No gift shop Neutral - Check-in was slow - Bathroom was right next to the bed in the bedroom and the bathroom door was made of something like glass so noise/light could disturb sleep - Very few non-Chinese TV channels - Some staff did not speak English well, the universal language of travel Miscellaneous - Pool looked nice but did not use - Review is based on my Gold Marriott Bonvoy status Impression - I give it a 4.5 but rounding up to 5 TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beware of SPA in the Hotel

May 27th, 2019

Hotel is fine. Good location and big rooms, however some of them have outdated interior. Beware of visiting the Spa. They send massagist to your room and there are prostitutes among them. They do not know anything about massage and do it horribly. And in the end they suggest you to pay some extra money for sex. I was aware of this "service" generally in the city but never expected it to happen in the "luxury" hotel which Hongta is trying to be. My whole trip was ruined because of disease that one of the massagists gave me. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

How is this place a Luxury Collection Hotel?

May 7th, 2019

I've stayed at the Hongta hotel a handful of times, only because it's a few blocks away from my company's Shanghai offices. It's an acceptable hotel, but definitely nothing extraordinary, and DEFINITELY not what I would consider a Luxury Collection hotel. I heard a rumor that the property used to be a St. Regis and while I can't confirm that, it does seem to be a possibility. What the hotel looks/feels like on the inside is like an old St. Regis that wasn't well maintained over the years. And so you do notice some of these maintenance issues. Carpets fraying, dings in the wall, etc. The hotel seems to be geared more towards local guests rather than an international crowd. Not all staff speak English (i.e. doorman, wait staff). You notice guests cutting in line (which is normal in Shanghai), but the staff doesn't do anything about it. The doormen outside don't do anything to help manage cars/traffic during the morning, just standing there watching. 2 eggs over medium is perpetually 2 eggs over easy. Oh, and when I ordered food to be delivered, one of the doorman came over, looked at what I ordered (Indian food), and laughed at how bizarre that was. How nice. The room is ok. Clean bed, bathroom, nothing really to complain about, but they can certainly do more on making sure there is proper maintenance. Executive lounge? Ok. Just a place to get a drink and a few bites. Overall, the issue I have with the hotel is the expectations from being a Luxury Collection hotel. I've stayed at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco as well as the Twelve at Hengshan hotel in Shanghai and both of those make sense as a LC. But not at the Hongta - set your expectations lower (i.e. a Four Points or maybe even a very basic Sheraton) and you'll find the hotel adequate. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
