Visitors praise hotel's spacious suites, indoor pool and on-site dining venues
Property has high room rates
First welcoming guests in 1895, The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, is an award winner several times over: Travel experts find what real-life lodgers uphold, which is that The Jefferson Hotel's design, furnishings and staff exude Southern charm. Recent visitors rave about the spacious rooms, each appointed with deluxe amenities like custom bedding, Molton Brown bath products and Nespresso coffee makers. For an extra dose of luxury, reserve one of the Ginter Suites, which each sprawl across more than 1,000 square feet and come equipped with a king-sized bed, a dressing area and a kitchenette, among other features. One of the best-loved amenities is this downtown hotel's indoor pool and its sequestered outdoor sundeck. Previous visitors also praise on-site restaurants Lemaire and TJ's. Lemaire is an upscale venue that specializes in new American fare, while TJ's is a casual Southern bistro that boasts an extensive selection of seasonal microbrews. Convenience is The Jefferson Hotel's other perk, as it's centrally located to visit both the Virginia State Capitol and the city's Museum District sites.

Critic Reviews

A 70-foot-high ceiling with a stained-glass skylight and 10 of the original Louis Comfort Tiffany stained-glass windows, rich tapestries, and replicas of traditional Victorian furniture make this the most elegant hotel in Richmond. The Palm Court Lobby is home to Edward Valentine's full-size statue of the president and to a magnificent sweeping staircase reminiscent of the one in Gone With the Wind.

The property's Palm Court lobby offers a Tiffany stained-glass dome, gorgeous brown couches and a life-sized marble statue of our third U.S. president that stands prominently amid the understated opulence. ... Rooms are decked out with flat-screen TVs and top-shelf bathroom amenities.

In 1895, 30 years after the firestorm that consumed Richmond as the Confederacy fell, Carrere & Hastings gave the city a magnificent Beaux-Arts pile that over the past decade has been splendidly restored to its crypto-Roman excess. No, the staircase was not used in Gone with the Wind, but alligators did once inhabit the pools in the Palm Court, and Scott and Zelda once cavorted here.

This ornate 1895 Beaux-Arts hotel is a historic landmark with striking architectural details, including a Tiffany stained-glass rotunda, a marble statue of Thomas Jefferson and a grand staircase. A small museum tells of the property's storied past and dispels many of the rumors and historic tales associated with the hotel.
