Overview

Unique ship-like decor and free in-room Wi-Fi
Some note the rooms are quite dark no matter the time of day

Situated on the border between the Meatpacking District and Chelsea, The Maritime Hotel adds a nautical feel to the New York City hospitality industry. The quirky decor means your digs will feature a porthole-like window and dark wood accents that resemble a ship's interior; however, many warn that the dark furnishings and small windows make The Maritime feel a bit dim. And 24-hour room service tastes better when eaten amid custom linens and goose-feather duvets. When you're in the mood for a full meal, head downstairs to Tao Downtown, which offers Pan-Asian eats and a nightclub atmosphere. Or, sit down for a bite to eat at the Italian eatery La Sirena. Overall, guests feel that the hotel's location is excellent (an easy walk to the 14th Street-Eighth Avenue subway station) and the rooms are a cozy yet comfortable size.

This canny repurposing of a former maritime union hall in west Chelsea is shipshape indeed: The focal point of every cruise ship cabin-like room is a five-foot porthole window facing the Hudson River.
