Location is perfect, rooms are just okay

Feb 24th, 2020

My husband and I travel to NYC quite a bit and decided to stay in Soho this time. The Mercer Hotel had great reviews and there is one reason why - great location in the center of Soho. The lobby is quite cozy, and the restaurant is very very good - I'm going to review that next. The room, which they referred to as a suite, was unimpressive. The bedding wasn't comfortable, the furniture looked like it was bought at Ikea and had serious wear and tear. The room temperature was not adjustable that we could tell. The bathroom was large. I found the service to be fine, not overly warm and helpful, but no complaints. I think they need to refresh to maintain their prices. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great Location, Lobby and Kitchen...BUT the Rooms are in DIRE need of a Remodeling

Feb 17th, 2020

So the Mercer is a classic in Soho I hadn’t stayed in in 10 years. When I arrived I recalled why I had chosen it: There is no more central Soho hotel location than this one on Prince and Mercer. They do a great job of keeping the still amazing and uber cool lobby an oasis for guests only in the middle of the frantic street activity outside. We ate before going up to our room and I can still say that the Jean George led Mercer Kitchen is going strong. The food was great. Once we went to our $900/night room the disappointment began. They clearly haven’t updated the rooms in many years or perhaps since the opening. I received a clue when I was given an actual metal room key for my room. I thought “how cool and retro!” Only to find that the room was very retro and not in a good way. The furnishings show wear and tear. You could still smell the stench from the era where you could smoke in rooms. The rooms have old fashioned fans and the ac unit is from the 90’s. We were given a studio loft that has a bathroom that is separated from the rest of the room by a flimsy wooden separation that kept on opening up every time one of us used the toilet (super romantic!). The sq ft that you read in the room profiles is a bit misleading. It may look high but this room in particular was all hallway and bathroom. After staying at the Mark, the Surrey, the Four Seasons and the Crosby I definitely felt like I was overpaying for what I was getting. The Crosby would be a much better deal even adjusting for the wonderful Mercer location. To the owners: stop milking the property, pause and invest in upgrading the rooms. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Smallish lovely hotel in a great location

Feb 2nd, 2020

This was our second stay at the Mercer. It's situated on a handsome shopping street in a great area. Staff are friendly, good restuarant with good choice of dishes and bar snacks. Handsome small lounge/eating area. Lovely bedrooms with some great views and attractive smart furniture. On our recent stay we got the last room (booked in an emergency after we hated the hotel we had reserved) and it was still great - though not a swish as the one we had the first time. Outstanding location, great rooms, nice restaurant. Stayed there more than 5 times and it is always a nice stay. Service is a bit blasé but here is a place where a number of artists stays so I guess they kinda treat everyone more or less lke non-celebrity lol... usually when you go to boutique hotels, people try to make you feel special, not here. But the location and room do the trick... TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
