Overview

Spacious rooms and highly regarded restaurant
Limited on-site amenities

Located on Broadway, the NoMad offers a central location six blocks south of the Empire State Building and three blocks north of Madison Square Park. Housed in a beaux-arts building, it's as if this hotel was destined to become a style icon from the start. French designer Jacques Garcia devised the concept of the rooms with his first apartment in mind, creating accommodations that feel more like living spaces than guest rooms. Walls of framed artwork and throw blankets may elicit the feeling of home, while amenities such as clawfoot tubs and upholstered dressing screens remind guests that they've entered into a whole new, impeccably styled world. Accommodations come with tech-friendly amenities like free Wi-Fi access and laptop and iPad rentals, available on request. What the hotel lacks in on-site facilities (it offers a fitness center but not much else), it makes up for in food. Recent guests raved about the excellent cuisine from Michelin-starred chef Daniel Humm at the on-site restaurant. And visitors say if you really want to feel like you're in New York without leaving the hotel, grab a drink in the ultra-swanky Library Bar.

Named for the emerging 'North of Madison' (that is, Madison Square Park) neighborhood in which it's located, this upscale-bohemian property was one of the most buzzed-about hotel openings of 2012.

The 168 guest rooms are luxurious (there are Sferra linens, Frette towels, and robes), and successfully evoke a bygone era with Persian rugs, old maps, and antique-looking fixtures.

When compared with most other hotel rooms in Manhattan, a classic 340-square-foot bedroom at the NoMad felt like a suite. There was ample room to wander around the substantial king-size bed and space enough for a mahogany desk and flat-screen TV.
