You do not get what you pay for; how do they have 4 stars?

Sep 22nd, 2019

It is currently day 3 of our 4-day stay here at the Omni King Edward. The lobby is gorgeous, the location is perfect, great mattress, one nice employee (an Asian man at the front desk, I should have gotten his name), and we are happy they accommodate pets. However, we are very disappointed. Perhaps we had unrealistic expectations, or our experiences with lesser rated hotels that provided better service were atypical. Regardless, from the moment we parked to check-in, the service has consistently shown the drastic difference between a 4 and 4.5 star hotel. To support our assessment, the following is a snapshot of our experience: (1) nowhere to park to unload our bags and no bellman upon our arrival to assist with bags; (2) I called ahead of time to verify their ability to exchange currency, told there was no limit, but discovered that there is a $300 limit, but then a few days later was able to exchange more by a different staff member; (3) the woman that checked us in was very rude, and became visibly frustrated with me as I took a little long, but not an unreasonable time, to find the necessary documents; (4) called ahead of time to verify that I would not need the physical card to check-in, but demanded it upon arrival and was told very clearly they would turn us away if we could not produce one; (5) we were told to check-in with concierge to have our bags sent up to our room, but then concierge acted as if we were wasting his time and were idiots for not being sent somewhere else; (6) ridiculously excessive costs, compared to like hotels, such as a pot of coffee that was described as “large,” that we were not allowed to retrieve on our own, but forced to have it delivered to our room—charging “a delivery fee” that totaled $22; (7) furnishings at the level of a Holiday Inn room for $120 night, but a charge of $300 a night; (8) if you want to use the refrigerator “for perishables”, you have to call to have it turned on—but they at least do not charge you for that, oh and ice is “complimentary” but they give you the impression they are waiting on a tip; (9) although they say you can “self-park” for $12, that is not a realistic option, you are essentially coerced into pay $54 a day for valet; and (10) told that we would be ejected if our pet made too much noise, but were unable to pickup towels and such from the front desk to avoid him barking at the door when deliveries arrived. In conclusion, we have the resources for this hotel and these fees—but we fully expect to receive what we pay for. The lack of choice, inconsistent information prior to booking with the reality, excessive costs, and negative experiences with service, leaves resentment that is not eased by a lush lobby and historical significance. If you don’t mind throwing money away, good for you, go ahead and book it. However, if you work for your money— we’d suggest to look elsewhere. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Efficient and comfortable upmarket business hotel. Pity about the WiFi.

Sep 21st, 2019

The hotel is located in the business district. It is a very central location, but if you are visiting outside business hours (we were there during Labour Day weekend) you will find a lot of restaurants, etc. around the hotel closed. Upon arrival, we immediately noticed that the staff is very friendly, professional and helpful. The lounge area is amazing. Just not sure what the significance of the massive chess pieces was. We had a King room. Room decoration was a bit standard (but upmarket) business hotel. Well appointed though, looked it was done up relatively recently and with large comfortable bed and shower. View was that of a building site. But we had not come for that, so not an issue. What was a let down was that the room WiFi (it was free) was unacceptably bad. We did read they were gong to upgrade it soon. Too late for us though. We did not eat in the hotel (breakfast was not included and we find most hotels overcharge for breakfast). Check out was quick and efficient. It is not cheap, but forgetting about the WiFi, does provide the service and value for the price. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Well placed downtown hotel!

We chose the Omni via a travel site due to the competitive pricing. The property is luxurious, calm, and relaxing. Our room was extremely clean, well appointed and spacious. The concierge fantastic! The property is located in the heart of everything, we walked all over the city from this location. When’s we learned we would need a car for the next leg of our trip, the concierge had one waiting at the door the next morning! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
