A few things in the way of 5-star status

Jul 17th, 2019

The check-in was tough. we arrived--around 4 pm--the room wasn't ready. So we waited for about an hour and even though I requested otherwise they placed us in a room overlooking the street. Other people had advised against it in reviews. On the 2nd night--a car alarm went off around 5:30 am. We were only on the 3rd floor and it certainly woke us up. 10 minutes later--but did it really matter?--they were able to shut the car alarm off. The stay did get better. On the first morning we took part in the breakfast that was included in our stay. Simply. Amazing. The staff, the chef, the food. We went back for three consecutive mornings and would note this as simply incredible. The food was healthy and tasty. Highly recommend. My wife and I worked out each day. I have some good news and some bad news for the fitness-minded. Good News? They have two Peloton bikes. What a cool thing to have at a hotel and it was so good to login cleanly and workout smoothly. Very cool. The Bad News? They have two Peloton Bikes. On Day 2 the bikes had been secured by another couple. Not complaining--I'm excited a hotel has workout equipment of this stature! One individual to be highlight would be Bailey. He helped us arrange a trip to the Botanical Gardens. Quite a limited amount of time, but his results were fabulous. You can walk to everything from this hotel without being in the mix of the city. Ironically you are across from city hall and save for the car alarm go off it was relatively quiet. Great Friendly Staff

Jul 15th, 2019

We just stayed at the Press Hotel for 2 nights. Great location. Beautiful bathroom. The staff was so polite and helpful. The restaurant, Union, was fabulous. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars was because our room was on the side across from the firehouse and the loading area for the hotel and restaurant. It was noisy sometimes but it is a city. I would stay again but ask for a room higher up or on another side. I would stay here again. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Memorable visit, unique hotel

Press Club The hotel is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Located in the 1923 Portland Press Herald newspaper building, The Press Hotel. There are many artistic touches which echo this journalistic theme - the hallway rugs with typeset alphabet letters, the wooden printers block letters behind the front desk, and the hallway wallpaper with newspaper quotes. Sleek, urban masculine chic Yet warm and inviting lobby. Excellent breakfasts and dinners at the Union Club restaurant. Clean, fresh bedrooms in the urban chic mode with Maine touches . While the rooms are not so large, the bathrooms are enormous, as are the showers. White marble, and black again make for a masculine urban chic look. The toiletries are Bigelow & Co. products and generous sized. There is a gym that’s well stocked as well as a small art gallery below. Also a separate cozy bar area and library room. The staff are young and professional, and have a very can do attitude which makes for a very pleasant stay, and good memories. This is from the receptionist to the wait staff and car Park guys/girls ... it’s noteworthy how positive they are. Critiques: The room could have used one lounge chair ( they have a desk chair) and bed reading lights that were within easy reach. WSJ and NYT newspapers available in lobby along with early morning coffee for guests. The charge for valet parking car was about $32.00 Critiques: The room could have used one lounge chair ( they have a desk chair) and bed reading lights that were within easy reach. Fun, sophisticated hotel with great staff

Jul 8th, 2019

We just spent 4 nights at the Press. It has been beautifully renovated and is in a great area of town, within walking distance to everything. It has a fantastic upscale restaurant with a chef who has won many awards. The bar is great for coffee, lattes, and evening drinks. The bartenders were very nice and made a great drinks. I want to give particular thanks to a man named Josh who worked at the front desk. He is a native Mainer, and he had so many helpful tips for us to explore the city. He knows the city really well, and he can give you all kinds of restaurant recommendations. He told us about a music club called Blue, which we really enjoyed. He also recommended that we use the hotel bikes (nice Trek bikes) and take them on the ferry to ride around Peak's Island. Our visit to Portland was enriched greatly by all of the advice that Josh gave us, and we appreciate that the staff takes the time to talk with you, find out your interests, and then point you in the right directions. We will definitely be back in large part due to Josh. There is no other place we'd rather stay in Portland! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Perfect location and first class hotel

Jul 8th, 2019

Stayed for 3 nights and found this a very comfortable, clean hotel. The staff were very helpful and gave some good advice on parking especially. Although we didn't eat here it was very handy for all of the main areas of Portland and just a short stroll to the harbour side. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
