Perfect Local Staycation

Jul 25th, 2020

Service here is nothing short of exceptional. Even with limitations on what is open we had an amazing time. Villas are beautiful and we love the isolation of the villa pool. We can't wait to return again at the end of the summer for another get away. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautfiul property, fantastic service

Jun 9th, 2020

The grounds of the Pelican Hill resort are simply stunning. The landscaping, the layout, and the views are top notch, especially in the public areas. The bungalows were spacious and beautiful, with a very comfortable bed, and a huge, and comfortable, balcony/patio. The bathroom was large, and the tub large enough to have a large-framed male soak in it. The bed was extremely comfortable. Throughout the stay, the staff on all counts was very friendly and attentive, and did not hesitate to respond, enthusiastically, to any request. This is definitely a five-star resort (with corresponding prices, of course), but the grounds and location are simply stunning. If I had to pick a gripe, it would be that traffic noise is quite noticeable from the balcony, but it isn't all that distractive, and certainly doesn't take much away from the ambience. Even with virus issues this is a place I cannot give a high rating to yet. Beware.

May 31st, 2020

Okay. So we were needing a change of scenery (although earlier in May visited the San Ysidro Ranch and am about to write that review) and decided Pelican Hill might be perfect for us. We booked through Amex Centurion although learned both during the booking and the stay that the Centurion level means nothing to Pelican Hill. Checked the family into a 3 bedroom "villa" and was happy to be told that we would have a butler available to us at all times. Unfortunately the check-in was the only time we saw our butler and every time I pushed the "butler" button on the phone I got a different person at the front desk. I will say that each person I spoke to with any request was terrifically nice and seemed to be genuinely hospitable, however, very little resulted after each of my several calls. The "villa" is nice enough but had way too much deferred maintenance for a 5 star property. The kitchen sink faucets barely worked and there was a light fixture hanging down out of the area above the sink (not a hanging fixture but a broken one handing out of the socket). The laundry facility in the garage was below standard for a college dorm and certainly not for a 5 star resort. Beware that room service is insanely expensive and without any courtesy provisions of any kind except Nespresso capsules. I asked for 6 bottles of diet coke and did get them (the small old style bottles) and was floored to see that it was a $48 charge and that added to that was a $7 "delivery fee" and then an automatic 21% "gratuity". On one occasion I asked the room service person if we could have a "bit of olive oil" a a "bit of vinegar" as we were making a small salad. I was told "sure" and I made clear that I really only needed a splash of each. Delivery came with a small plastic container of each with a $28! charge plus the $7 delivery plus 21%...my wife took one look and said "no thanks". The pool was closed because of the virus (which we knew ahead of time) but the driver service to and from the beach was great and a very bright spot for the trip. BUT, if you can imagine, when I asked about turn down service at a specific time window I was told "sorry; we are not doing turn down service these days"!! Certainly not what could be expected from a 5 star resort and no real explanation was given. The resort is a convenient getaway for us and the villa works well for our family and we will likely give it another try very soon. Hopefully the service level will match the nice people on the phones (and the shuttle drivers who were great) and maybe someone should re-visit whether or not they should be trying to make room service as much of a profit center (outrageous) as it is. COVID Staycation

May 13th, 2020

Needed a break and a change of perspective/scenery from home during the COVID pandemic so decided to stay somewhere local but very different than home. This was our second stay here and my second birthday celebration at the Pelican as well. We had a wonderful time, and one night was too short! We stayed in a lovely ocean-view villa (previously stayed in a bungalow). It was honestly too much space for us (we kept 2 of the 3 bedroom doors closed and never went in) but the living room and terrace were wonderful. The staff were excellent. Everything felt clean. I wasn't sure about the kitchen utensils and cups (when they were last used and disinfected) so we didn't use most of them and re-cleaned everything we used with soap and hot water. Nothing against the Pelican, but we just had no way to know. Maybe for a post-COVID world, they might need to provide minimal kitchenware and keep things sealed up? I wish there was a little less interaction with the staff after checking in - we had 2 staff come by with extra towels (we didn't request them as we already had tons) and had to re-sanitize the areas they went to. Also, late at night someone came to our front door and peeked in while we were watching a movie, but he went away. He left the gate to our villa wide open as I saw the next morning. Sure, it doesn't lock but not sure why he came and why he left the gate open. Overall, had a peaceful and restful stay, and already have our next stay booked for my wife's birthday. Location, Room, Service- 5 STARS all the way !

Mar 18th, 2020

I have traveled the world and the Resort at Pelican Hill is now one of my new favorite hotels. The expansive grounds are beautiful with the gigantic round Coliseum pool with a surrounding restaurant. There is also a fine dining restaurant called Andrea and the Pelican Grill across the street. The spa is beautiful with travertine tiles everywhere and a large jacuzzi, steam room, and relaxation room. They also have various activities including yoga. The bungalows are very cozy with ocean views, large patios, and fireplaces. The service is top- notch and I look forward to my return soon. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
