Overview

On-site spa amenities include a hammam, steam room, Finnish sauna and saltwater infinity pool
Nightly room rates here are high

The Standard, Miami Beach certainly looks pretty: Rooms welcome guests with stocked minibars, complimentary Wi-Fi access (covered by the daily $24.99 resort fee) and rain showers. But for a change of scenery, make your way to the hotel spa, which houses a Turkish-style hammam and offers a bevy of yoga and fitness classes. Considering rooms at this hotel can rise higher than $1,000 a night, many say this spa resort is not worth the money. Still, if you do decide to stay here, you'll have access to the hotel's waterfront infinity pool, as well as the organic Mediterranean fare served at the on-site Lido Bayside Grill. If you're looking to imbibe in true Miami Beach fashion, plan on spending an evening at The Lido's bar and lounge; it may not be as lively as South Beach's bars, but the drinks are good. There's also a juice cafe if you're looking for something light by the pool. You'll find The Standard along the skinny Venetian Causeway on Belle Isle, about a mile west of central Miami Beach.

This 1960s Morris Lapidus-designed motel has been transformed into the most innovative new hostelry in South Florida. Creator and part-owner Andre Balazs' research into European spas is apparent here, as this water park-for-sophisticates is built around communal spa activities, rather than the solitary treatments that are the mainstay of US hotels and resorts. (Coed activities include lolls in the 90-degree hammam, birch leaf-brushing in the cedar sauna, or DIY-body painting outdoors in the bayside mud lounge.)

The Standard, in its own twisted fashion, actually honors the unhinged history of mid-century Miami Beach. ... A decidedly personal vision reigns in the public areas, with the usual Modernist suspects – Aalto tea trolleys, vintage Danish furniture, Arne Jacobsen sconces from an old SAS hotel in Stockholm – counterpointed by riskier propositions such as beanbag coffee tables and a Hans Hopfer denim sectional sofa that sprawls out like an errant amoeba.

An extension of André Balazs's trendy and hip – yet budget-conscious – brand, this shabby-chic boutique spa hotel is a mile from South Beach on an island just over the Venetian Causeway and boasts one of South Florida's most renowned spas, trendiest bars, and hottest pool scenes. The message: we'll do what we please, and the cool kids will follow.

Slightly off the beaten track on a small, condo-crammed island linked to South Beach by the Venetian Causeway, hotshot hotelier André Balazs rescued the decrepit 1950s Lido Spa and in 2005 transformed it into an adults-only boutique oasis whose spa facilities and services are very much the star of the show, with the longest list in town of wellness treatments and dozens of sundry activities and classes focusing on fitness, meditation, and beyond.

The Standard Miami is a hip, four-pearl spa hotel with 100 rooms located on Belle Isle, between downtown Miami and South Beach. The centerpiece is the hotel's famous spa, which features hydrotherapy baths, a mud room, and a Turkish hammam, and though some of the retro-inspired rooms feature perks like wrap-around decks with private soaking tubs, many are compact and could use a little TLC.
