Great location/property, but...
Jul 20th, 2020
The property is very charming and in a perfect location. Our experience was unique due to COVID-19, but the women at the front desk was very helpful. Breakfasts were conveniently in a to-go pouch that you could eat on the property or take to go. The rooms were clean and bright. The deck area was relaxing and lovely. The only thing that impacted our stay was that the room wasn't set up after our check in time (no toilet paper or towels) and our luggage was left out in the open in the lobby after the receptionist left for the day. The owners said this was due to COVID-19, but we were uncomfortable with the fact that our luggage was left out and not even moved behind the desk. The women at the front desk and the cleaning staff were very nice, lovely, and helpful but I can't say the same for the owners. Seems like Carl had made the place very welcoming and gave a personal touch that is no longer here. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Don’t stay you’ll be disappointed

Booked two rooms with queen beds we got tiny compact room with a full beds. The rooms are sterile, no hair dryer, asked for laundry bag they didn’t have it either, its also so small not even space for any luggage. In my room the air conditioner didn’t work. The other room my friends shower was broken. Breakfast was late had many guests waiting, it also wasn’t good, just yogurt juice and coffee yet wasn’t served till after 8:30 which is so late when you hear everything and up for hours. Many of us guests were on the patio waiting for the “breakfast” The service is worse, no ones ever at the front desk. I wouldn’t stay here. it’s $600 a room and you get cheap beds/pillows rooms tiny rooms. They had one communal pitcher of water that was empty the entire time. ( I loved 21 broad when I stayed there last year.) Stay there, save yourself from this place. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
No more Carl!
Dec 28th, 2019
My family and I are very upset that Carl is gone! We have been staying at The Veranda House for years. Carl was always so great! We looked forward to seeing him year after year. We are not sure if we will return in the summer. There are many more inn's in downtown Nantucket. What made us keep coming back every year to The Veranda is Carl and his great housekeeping skills. He made us feel so welcome and we felt like friends to him. We looked forward to the 3 course breakfast, cookies and wine in the afternoon and the turndown service at night. The quotes and twizzlers were a nice touch also. All of those things are what keep guests coming back. I hope the new owners didnt force Carl to leave and that he left on his own. Such a shame. This is what happens when bigger companies buy out quaint bed and breakfasts and turn it into more of a "chain" hotel. Carl set the bar so high that I dont know if the new innkeepers/owners can do the same. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
No more Carl
Dec 14th, 2019
My family has been staying at the Veranda Hotel for several years, both in the summer and during Stroll in December. It has been like our home away from home, knowing as we walk up the hill that we will be greeted by Carl, who has always made us feel like we are his old friends. I knew something was off when I didn’t receive his usual email the day before our arrival, inquiring about what time we’d be arriving. Anyone who has stayed at the Veranda knows that check-in is almost always whenever you happen to arrive, particularly in December, when no one has occupied the rooms in months. When we excitedly walked into the Veranda this visit, there was no Carl. There is an entirely new management team who let us know that check in was at 3pm (we entered the inn with several people who came over on the 8:15 boat with us and happened to be staying at the Veranda as well.) We were told we could leave our bags and they would be locked up ‘in the back.’ We gave our cell number to the person at the desk and were told they would call in a couple of hours, as the rooms were being ‘freshened up.’ The inn had not been open since October, so it was strange that any freshening that needed to happen had not already occurred prior to the arrival of so many guests. It seemed that the new staff had not been adequately prepared for Stroll, though the inn was sold out. We called three hours later and the voice mail told us that the inn was closed for the season (!). We walked back up from town where we found not only our luggage but that of many others clogging the walkway into the living area (and a guest looking through one of our shopping bags!) Several of us sat and listened as the new innkeeper made a phone call to a guest that wasn’t even on the property, telling them that their room was available(!). We were finally allowed into our room four hours after our arrival. Despite the bumpy start, things improved. The innkeepers were friendly enough, and did seem to genuinely want to be welcoming and accommodating during the stay, but with Carl having set the bar so high for so long, the service wasn’t what it used to be. There is no turndown service. No Dave Matthews quotes on cards with twizzlers left on your bed at night. No wine being poured in the afternoon. No three course breakfasts, though what was offered (quiche and yogurt parfaits, muffins, breads) was very good. Anyone who is a first-timer at the Veranda will likely give it a high rating. It is a lovely property, but those of us who are accustomed to the prior standard of service felt the void. Carl was the beloved face of the property and no one likes to lose an old friend. We loved everything about this hotel. We walked up from Steamship Wharf and it took less than 5 minutes. We knew we were super early so just wanted to go and drop off our bags. Carly at the front desk said our room was being cleaned so to come back in about half an hour. We went for a bit to eat and when we got back Carl handed us the keys to our room - our bags were already up there. We were in room 23 on the top floor and the harbor view was everything we could ask for. Very nice balcony that we enjoyed sitting out on quite a bit. We already knew the room wasn't going to be large - but with the great windows and balcony it seemed much larger. The furnishings and bedding were great. It was super clean. Bathroom is a little tight but towels and toiletries were great. We found it very quiet at night and heard no other noise from inside the hotel. Breakfast in the morning was great - nice selection of muffins, bagels and bowls of fruit. Carl came around to take orders from the kitchen - either french toast or tomato/spinach quiche that day. We both had the quiche and it was delicious. My only complaint was that I couldn't access wifi at all in my room. Went down to the lobby and did get it there - not a huge deal as I wasn't on Nantucket to be on my computer the whole time anyways! We absolutely loved our stay and the service we received from this hotel. Would stay here again in a heartbeat! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
