Charming Victorian

My wife and I have travelled a lot over many years, and our room at Virginia Hotel was one of the nicest we have ever stayed in. The entire hotel exudes the Victorian charm that people come to Cape May to experience, as it is is full of cozy little nooks where guests can relax and enjoy privacy even at busy times. The association with Congress Hall (just steps away) provides access to amenities unavailable at other small hotels, and the location is perfectly situated for access to the beach AND the main shopping/dining areas Finally, we found the staff very friendly as well as efficient TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Loved it!

the Location was perfect near plenty of shopping, the beach, awesome restaurants, beautiful building and history! The hospitality was great, our room was cozy and bed comfy, the room was quiet~ couldn't ask for too much more. The only thing I would say that was kind upsetting was the lack of assortment for the included breakfast. It consisted of yogurt, fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs, and bagels it was all very well presented but that was it ~ I had to ask for a drink since only coffee was out for self serve. Would hands down sleep here again ~ parked at the strip mall just up the block, otherwise you can pay for valet. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Disappointed

Our first visit to The Virginia Hotel. Narrow street with no parking, sign said Valet but no one to direct you to leave your car, stay with your car, park it yourself. Valet finally came and moved our car, he was very polite. Upon entering we went to desk and told them we had a reservation. We were a little early and room was not ready. Walking distance to the shops and restaurants, we took a walk and did a little shopping. Got a call from front desk our room was ready. We dressed and went downstairs for a drink pre dinner, it was SO crowded with no where to sit or stand. Social hour. Finally a couple got up and left we sat near the fireplace, it was cold. The front door swings and the night was very cold with people coming in and out it was uncomfortable. Went to dinner and returned around 10PM with the crowds still there but a nice piano player. We were tired to went to bed around 11. Could hear the noise from the bar till about 12:30AM. Bed was the best part of the weekend, it was really comfortable. Went down for the continental breakfast, no direction as to what to do, no one there to seat you so we sat ourselves. Not one person asked if we would like tea or coffee husband had to find someone. Tea was lukewarm, no milk or cream offered, had to go and find someone. Food is displayed on the bar. Yogurt, berries, danish and hard boiled eggs. We had dinner reservations at the Ebbitt Room for the evening so we spent the day riding around and seeing the area till it started to rain. Returned to hotel and got ready for dinner. Went down to have a drink, it was more crowded then Friday night, actually a fire hazard as all the doorways were crowded with standing people. Found a barmaid ordered a drink, took 20 minutes to get it as we stood in the hall. Were seated on time. Took 15 minutes of sitting there to finally get a waiter. His shirt was dirty and misbuttoned. Told us of specials and asked if we wanted another drink. No wine list, we had to ask. The restaurant is very loud so no conversations without others hearing. We ordered dinner, I told the waiter I did not eat meat. Ordered swordfish, which was very good but the sides were swimming in oil and butter and the greens were cooked with meat. The service was terrible not seeing our waiter again till he asked if we wanted dessert. With all the reviews we expected so much more. Sorry to say the best part of our stay was the comfortable bed. We will not return for the amount of money staff should be all over the guests to ensure they are enjoying their stay. We are well traveled. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Lovely

This is a lovely hotel convenient to shops, restaurants and beaches of Cape May. There are a lot of stairs and no elevator so be prepared to climb and tote your bags. The bar/restaurant is beautiful and busy. We enjoyed drinks on the enclosed porch while listening to the piano player. Our room was on the second floor back of the house. The view was of the noisy exhaust fan & rooftop. The room was small but very clean. The bed was comfortable with very nice linens. The bathroom has no place to put toiletries etc. and not convenient. The parking is valet only as snagging a spot on the street is improbable & metered in high season. There are lots of great things about The Virginia: staff, ambience and bar scene but so many inconveniences will make us look elsewhere the next time we come to Cape May. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Lovely in every way

Stayed for 2 nights with my sister (who has the talent to find excellent accommodations). We loved every part of this hotel. The building is beautiful and centrally located. The staff is friendly and polite. The room was stylish and comfortable and the common spaces excellent. We especially loved the porch and the lobby / bar area with a fireplace, plush sofa, and beautiful decor. The only area of improvement: breakfast selection could be a bit wider. They serve continental breakfast - included in room price. It is good quality but choices are limited. Generally speaking 5 stars (I don’t give it too often) and would go back any time!
