Nice summer stay at the Capital

Using the upgrade coupon to secure one of the best view suite room for our stay, Gabrielle N. - Westin Experience Supervisor was most helpful to provide helpful hints for our lovely stay. With platinum membership, the full buffet breakfast was free. Front desk staff was most friendly!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Overall the westin Ottawa was ok at best. Nice lobby helpful staff but there is a lot to be desired from a value standpoint. This hotel was one of the most expensive ones in the area even more so that the lord Elgin which has stellar reviews. On top of the already pricey base room rate there is 30 dollars for parking, also if you have a vehicle that is taller than 6’2 you will have to park down the street and in the neighbouring parking garage for the same 30 dollars. On top of that the wifi is 10.95 a night for the basic package... I feel I should mention that both the fairmont and the lord Elgin have wifi included for similar pricing. The pool at the Westin was again underwhelming, it was cloudy and all the vents are rusty, the walls looked unclean and the ceiling tiles matched, the hot tub was a good temperature but looked and felt slimy. The hotel is in a good spot and has some nice views but I don’t see any value here, it’s not the cost of the extras that bothers me as much as the feeling of cheapness from supposedly a top brand in hotels. Great location, but...

The location is great, close to everything, rooms have great views of the city from top floors. The room decor is a little outdated, bathroom is not that big, it doesn't look too modern, and the air filter had visible dust on it. The coffee machine was old, the king size bed was very high, the comforter was heavy. Rooms are not very quiet, I could hear people flushing the toilet in the adjacent rooms. The concierge gave me the wrong directions to the National Gallery of Canada! He directed me to the National Arts Center, although I have told him I wanted to see the Paul Gauguin exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada/Fine Arts Museum. I have spent an hour trying to find my way around, in sweltering heat! I have asked if there was a roof top place (as advertised in the hotel description) where I could enjoy the city panorama and the concierge directed me to the 22nd floor, only to find out that the place was closed, it was only available for special occasions and events. The WIFi is not free, and there is no free breakfast either, although for the kind of money you pay for the room, these should be free. The Shore Club restaurant was a total disappointment, overpriced and not at all gourment as it's advertised (I will write a separate review for the restaurant). TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Missing Marriott Points

We love the location & amazing housekeeping & front office staff. We were here for a conference mid-June for a week. Rooms can use an update but it is kept clean & functional. Food was great during our conference. The only misadventure is the hotel will not post any Marriott hotel points for our stay. We have asked the Marriott contact centre to look into our missing hotel points & we have called as well with no one willing to look into this issue. We are platinum elite members & most hotels post points within a few days & maybe a week after departure. It has been almost a month & each time we have made an inquiry as to why the points have not been posted we get the runaround. "Managers are going to look into it" "It can take up to 2 weeks" & so on. There is always an excuse. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful Rooms, Amenities Lacking

My hotel room was beautiful. Very spacious, excellent view, daily housekeeping did a great job. The wifi is terrible, it connects briefly and frequently kicks you offline and can’t connect. This reoccurred every day on multiple devices for my entire week’s stay. There’s a store in the building but when I tried to go to it, the staff told me it was closed, despite the lights on and doors open still. Shopkeeping 101: Close the door is always the first step of closing up shop. Also, I’ve never stayed at a hotel that did not have a vending machine somewhere in the building for drinks. So overall, stunning room, great location, needs a bit of work on the amenities. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
