the Westin is back.....but still working out the kinks

Jul 15th, 2019

My extended family and I (13 in all among three villas) stayed for a little over a week in mid July and were amazed that the property itself was back in amazing shape after the hurricane damage that we saw illustrated in pictures near the lobby at check-in. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating whenever we had a question or issue if they were available, but I believe the resort was significantly understaffed during our stay because housekeeping was not up to our standards based on past experiences, there were fewer front desk staff and concierge staff, as well as waitstaff, bartenders, and pool/event staff members, so getting service was a bit slower. The only staff that seemed to increase from past stays was those that drove the carts around the property, which seemed to conflict with pedestrian traffic at times. I am chalking all of this up to the fact that there was a devastating hurricane less than two years ago, and the property just re-opened six months ago. I am certain it will be back up to par within the next year.....at least I am hopeful. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Westin St. John 2019

The Westin St. John Resort Villas are amazing! The views are spectacular and the resort property is beautiful and well maintained! The staff is friendly and the concierge team is knowledgeable and very helpful! Wonderful property and has recovered extremely well from the hurricanes. EXPLORE the beaches and swim with the Turtles at Maho Bay and don't not go to Trunk Bay, just go on a non cruise ship day---every beach is beautiful! The entire island is paradise! First time at Westin St John

Jul 14th, 2019

We are Starwood owners and have been trying to get into St John for many years. Due to a cancellation we were able to get a 2 bedroom villa. We were so excited to visit this property! Ferry experience was amazing, fast and efficient except the cost! 120 per person is a bit steep. We checked in at the airport and our room was ready. Easy getting through that process. What we were not prepared for was how expensive everything was! Drinks were outrageous. 4 drinks with tip was $50 a round. That’s completely insane! For the quality of food that was ridiculous. The bar service at the pool was absolutely terrible. They were in no Rush to serve you and in fact they made you feel like we should be honored they were waiting on you. We tried to small talk and joke with them and they wanted none of it. They know they have you and they don’t have to give quality service! Room was beautiful and view was unbelievable! They need to provide trash receptacles our a trash shoot. No where to put it and in turn we put it outside our door which attracts bugs and mice! $3000 in maintenance fees and we shouldn’t be worried about bugs and nice. Very disappointed with the amount of money we spent and poor quality service. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

So happy to return to Westin St. John

Jul 14th, 2019

We've been villa owners at Westin St. John since 1998, and have no intention of ever trading our weeks there. We love it! So happy to be able to return after missing last year due to hurricane damage and restoration. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Amazing Return

Jul 13th, 2019

Our last visit was just prior to the hurricanes, so we were a bit nervous with some of the reviews. First, the new ferry is excellent, and well worth the extra fee for the convenience. We were in 1421 at Sunset Bay, 2br 2 ba. The overall condition of the property is frankly stunning. Sure, you can tell they had to replace many of the palm trees, and some of the big trees were severely damaged. Also weird not to see the old lobby building. We prepared most of our own meals, shopping at either the nearby St. John market, or the better stocked Starfish market. The selections seemed more limited than last time, so perhaps the supply chain has not reached equilibrium yet. We had little competition for grill time, unlike last time. We only ate at Snorkels for lunch before we left, which was fine. Interestingly, the beach at the Westin seemed to have more chairs than last time, and the beach itself seemed more manicured. Staff were very accommodating, though we really did not ask for much. Pro Tip: if you plan on cooking, bring little plastic bags of salt, pepper, and essential spices so you don’t have to buy expensive stuff at the store. We brought foil too. Shout out to Chef Oliver for the Caribbean recipe tips (maybe the most fun person on the staff), and Sam for seeing us off at the ferry. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
