Westin St John - lovely resort

Feb 16th, 2020

The Westin St John is the only "hotel" resort on St John now. However, it is primarily a timeshare, where owners of time here get precedence when booking. Hotel time can be booked in these villas if close to the time you'll stay and for shorter times and will be based on the priorities of the owners. It's regreatly covered since the hurricane of 2017. The best on Island!

Feb 13th, 2020

Just fantastic Snorkels is up and running- Lemongrass has morning buffet! Word is new restaurant for dinner opening soon. Tennis courts, basketball court brand new and hopping! Fitness center and yoga- gets the stresses out and you ready for day at the beach. New and beautiful sand was brought in during my stay - only one day inconvenienced but pool is super! Including hot tub! Took Westin ferry to and from airport- best choice. Car rental is also perfect and a breeze- recommend making reservations prior to coming. Can’t say enough- perfect place to chill!🌴🐠🌴 TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

So many inconsistencies, probably won't go back, especially for the price

Feb 13th, 2020

We stayed in a 3BR villa with a private pool for four nights. We are mainly villa renters on St John but because our friends wanted to stay at the Westin for a change, we decided to stay there as well. My family was a group of five. They also stayed in a 3BR villa w/pool and were a group of six. Check in process at airport was relatively painless although when I swiped my Amex for incidentals after being assured by the check-in employee that my room charges would still be on my MC that I originally used to book the room, I immediately got an alert from Amex that a $9000 hold was placed on my account. My daughter and her boyfriend had arrived one day prior to us and had booked a studio room for one night, and they would then be transferring to our villa when we arrived the next day. Unfortunately, when the Westin checked her out of the one-night studio stay, they proceeded to charge HER credit card for our $9000 upcoming villa charge that had also been put on hold at the airport on MY card. So two $9000 holds/charges for one villa. Unbelievable. She got it straightened out, but still was quite a nuisance. We pre-booked the Westin ferry and our friends did the same. My original email advising the Westin of our flight times and number of people was never confirmed, so I had to reach out a week later to a different Westin employee who asked that I forward my email to her, which she then confirmed. My group was herded into one mini bus to Red Hook, our friends were put on a different bus. My family boarded the small, already crowded Westin ferry and by the time our friends got to the ferry gate, the ferry employee cut off any more people from boarding. Even though the Westin wants you to advise them ahead of time regarding arrival times, flight numbers, and number of people taking the Westin ferry, they had overbooked. And now our friends were supposed to wait until the next ferry, 2 hours later, which was ridiculous. After some fussing, the ferry employees finally unloaded a ton of luggage and a handful of Westin employees, and then allowed our friends to board. Our luggage was to follow soon after, being brought over on the larger Westin ferry that suddenly became available? Interesting. Our villa wasn't ready upon our arrival, although our friends' villa was, and they were picked up by golf cart to be taken to their villa after being provided a welcome packet of information and gift. Five minutes later, our villa was ready, but we received no welcome packet nor gift. We got to our villa (around 3:30 pm) to find someone else's luggage still in our living room, even though check out was at 10 am. I called to alert the Westin of this and someone came to pick it up. Our luggage arrived soon after that. Villa layout was LR/DR/kitchen on main floor along with master BR and bath. Second floor had 2 BR and one bathroom. The villa was advertised as 3BR/3BA, which in reality, it was not. The master bedroom had a separate whirlpool tub, along with a bathroom that contained a shower, a double vanity, and a toilet. Attached to the main bathroom was a separate toilet/single vanity that could be closed off from the master BA and used as a powder room for the first floor living space. This isn't a big deal, but the two upstairs bedrooms had to share one bathroom, which didn't match the advertised villa layout. Also, the two upstairs bedrooms were not totally private. There were sliding wood doors in place of a wall that could be slid opened or closed to section off the two rooms. This did not lend itself to much privacy between the two rooms, and while it may be practical for small children in the two bedrooms, it was a bit uncomfortable for our grown daughters, one of whom brought her boyfriend. The shower in the master bathroom leaked like there was no tomorrow. I'm talking a huge amount of water on the floor despite laying down numerous towels. It may seem like a little thing, but it was an annoyance nonetheless. It was apparent that our room preparation was rushed after the previous guests departed. We did not receive the promised pool towels, the kitchen "starter kit" of dishwasher detergent, dish soap, kitchen towels, etc. I had to call the service number a few times to get all of this delivered. I mention this since our friends received all of these things as part of their room preparation yet we did not. Considering that we were paying close to $2k per night, one would expect all that was promised. The villa itself was beautiful. The small pool and waterfall were gorgeous. The patio had plenty of seating. A/C worked well and the beds were extremely comfortable. The Westin property is beautiful and meticulously landscaped. Golf carts to take you from villa to other areas of the property were plentiful. There were always taxis available to take you to town or the beaches, $5pp to Cruz Bay, one way, $6 pp to Caneel/Honeymoon, $8 pp to Maho, one way. Taxi expense added up quickly, but we knew this going into it so we weren't overly surprised. We were told by our golf cart driver that Snorkels was the only operating restaurant on the property, but when we showed up to eat breakfast there our first morning, no one was around, nor was there any signage indicating it was closed. After waiting a bit and finally inquiring, we were told that Snorkels was not open for breakfast, and a breakfast buffet was now being served in the Lemon Grass restaurant, which had just re-opened after the hurricanes. Fine. We went to the buffet. Our server told us of the bottomless bloody marys and mimosas that were available, yet when we ordered them, it took forever to get them as they had to run to Snorkels to get the ingredients? Weird. This was a pattern that would happen during our entire stay. One restaurant is closed, the other open, but not stocked properly so the staff had to run back and forth between the two. It's a shame, because Snorkels is an open air restaurant and has such a lovely location right on the beach. It was open for dinner, but of course it is dark by then and you cannot see any views like you would if it had been open for breakfast. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Westin, but it was just the little things and oversights that detracted from our experience. For the prices they charge, we expect things to be as promised. I did reach out to a Westin manager after we got back home. He called me back and was somewhat sympathetic, but I do not feel any satisfaction regarding my complaints. We will most likely not book there again and will go back to renting a villa as I believe the overall value is better at a villa than the Westin. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Just okay for a Westin

Feb 13th, 2020

I don't think it's too much to expect the hospitality staff to be hospitable, but too many staff members here are cold and some just downright rude. Of course there were exceptions. Clint at concierge, Tony and James of Penn's taxi, but otherwise I was disappointed with the service. Told you carts were coming to get you that never showed. Left flip flops at the pool and was told to basically walk all over the resort to find them when one or two phone calls would have been more efficient and helpful. Asking for a clean towel seems to be asking for something above and beyond and be ready to work to flag down a waitress at the pool. Don't know if it is because they are mostly owner occupied, but I've never experienced this low level of service from a Westin. Am a long-term Marriott member and thought the merger would be a great thing, but so far, I'm not impressed. (Stayed at Westin LagunaMar in Cancun in November and that was better than this, but not but a vast degree.) TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Almost perfect

Feb 12th, 2020

We had a great vacation. We like our apartment on the hill. I was worry at the beginning because it looked far away from the main hotel facilities but the view from the balcony was amazing and we enjoy some of the greatest sunsets while having dinner. The swimming pool and BBQ facility right on the side of our buiding made it even more perfect. Less crowd and looked like our own private pool. We enjoy walking down the hill to reach the pool and the hotel restaurant, but service golf carts where always available if needed. The only inconvenience at the moment is that due to the after hurricane there is still not a decent restaurant except a fast food kind of restaurant at the beach but, if it is true what they said, there will be 2 new great ones soon.
