charming hotel full of history but location not the best

Aug 4th, 2019

the hotel is indeed an antique palace full of charme and the very moment you arrive you feel like you are back in time. the rooms are full of character and beautiful furnitures (actually do not go with large luggage since wardrobe is not so big). we could not enjoy the swimming pool because of bad weather. which was a pity. the only downside of the hotel is the location. to get to the beginning of the historical centre of Aix you need to walk 10-15 minutes along not pleasant streets which ruins a bit the overall atmosphere of the staying. i believe that when in Aix you should wake up and walk immediately in the beauty of its historical centre without the need of being disturbed by not nice roads. i suggest for the hotel to organise shuttle service- even with small golf cars- to preserve the overall atmosphere of the staying. TERRIBLY BAD SERVICE!! NEVER EVER AGAIN! We only stay in 5 star hotels and have been loyal customers to Relais&châteaux. We decided to check out this beautiful property, which had no 5 star hotel service elements in it whatsoever! We lounged at the bar salon and had a few drinks worth over 100 euros, we then ordered cheese & charcuterie but to our surprise they wouldn’t even serve us light food!! Why? because its hotel policy to ONLY SERVE FOOD TO HOTEL RESIDENTS!! (Mind you, this policy was written in French only). We understand that policy is policy (although totally insensible coming from a 5 star!!) We are paying customers and loyal to Relais&châteaux, the way Rémy [-] (from the restaurant) handled our request was extremely rude! He literally highered his voice from across our table in front of other restaurant patrons stating they are not willing to serve us food...not even cheese and cold cuts (which doesn’t require cooking!!) Mind you the restaurant was not even full. We immediately asked for the bill and Remy started to argue that we were disrespectful for the way we asked for the bill, this is when we realized the level of service rendered had absolutely no connection with the place and we had to leave. We are Relais&châteaux hotel and restaurant clients, but will never recommend anyone to go through this humiliation again!! This caused us a great deal of inconvenience and was extremely unwelcoming, Remy followed us to the reception as we quielty walked out of the lounge to privately speak to the manager (and argued with us again there!!), the experience felt very hostile and disgusting!! This message is directed to Laurent [-] (Managing Director of Villa Gallici). Continuing this way would be terrible for the property reputation and disastrous for Relais & Chateaux! italian villa on steroids

The menus are limited, but what is offered is excellent. The service is superb. The atmosphere is most charming. It's close enough to the old part of Aix-en-Provence to walk to, but just enough away so that it's very quiet. All you hear in the morning is birds singing, and at night you can see the stars. The garden is one of the best features, with interesting contemporary sculpture. All I really missed was someone playing the piano in the background while we were eating dinner. This property is in need of attention. Poor hot water and internet service. Some awkward room layouts with internal steps. Burnt out light bulbs in lamps went unchanged for several days after notice. Limited menu options. Inconvenient location within city. Aix-en-Provence is not worth visiting; there are much nicer destinations in Provence. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

This hotel is a bit of paradise in Aix en Provence. The rooms are lavishishly french along with the hotel decor. Beautiful gardens, fountains and roses everywhere. Staff professional and friendly. Hotel restaurant very good. Nothing better than breakfast on the terrace. One of my all time favorite hotels. Highly recommend. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
