Minimalist, dim hotel for the under 30 crowd without kids

Mar 9th, 2020

My husband and I stayed here last night to attend an event at The Moody Theater, which is next door. The lobby was very dim, the ceilings were painted like clouds, with bright, low to the floor, 1960s furniture. It had a Vegas vibe. If you have had a new hip or knee, this is not the furniture you want or, need to be sitting on. Grayson at the front desk was very pleasant and informative. He was nice enough to upgrade us to a "lake view" room, on a higher floor. We could see a sliver of the lake! We had a regular room with king sized bed that was hard as a rock and the pillows were squishy! We both had sore backs this morning! Since the theme is minimalist, they took out everything functional, like drawers, vanity space and walls. The clear glass shower was to the right as you entered the room out in the open. The toilet had a door and NO fan -- keep that in mind if you're a new couple! There was a lone hook to hang your clothes from if you did take a shower. There is a big, shallow sink with 4 inches of counter on both sides for your make-up. I had to put a towel in the sink and sit my make-up on that. There is a wonderful magnifying mirror by the sink, with a dim circle of light. A nightlight perhaps? The room, including the bathroom, was tremendously dim. Placed directly across from the bed was a tray of extremely overpriced snacks and the fridge was full to the brim of overpriced beverages. There were 2 bottles of water that were sitting on top a card that said "stay refreshed". Upon reading the card, you had to sign up for some rewards program for it to be complimentary. There was a long desk at the front of the room with a TV on top, fridge underneath and chair. I'm guessing drawers used to exist there. Room service was crazy expensive - $24 for a cheeseburger, $8 for fries. Parking was $49/night. Taxes were outrageous! There was an additional $25 sanitation fee. WiFi was also additional. I believe it was $14.95/day. We used our phones and didn't have any issues. I've stayed at numerous hotels, this place nickeled and dimed you to death! It was raining when we left and the overhang wasn't big enough to cover you or your car and the valets did not have umbrellas. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great location and friendly

Feb 23rd, 2020

The hotel is very well located in an area where there is not much noise. Staff is very friendly, food is great and the rooms are not only well appointed but kept very well (an issue with many W Hotels around the world). My only negative comment is that most of the employees are not from the area therefore it is hard to get good answers. There was only one concierge with local knowledge (Hanna) and she was great. BTW, the spa treatments are excellent. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

I guess they forgot to mention that the hotel is right next to a live music venue. There was loud music outside my room every single night of the week. I found it impossible to sleep until very late at night, when the music finally stopped. When I arrived the hotel was full, and I imagine I got one of the worst rooms. Any hotel experience in which I can't sleep is a bad experience. Even more, I'm not sure the hotel would be able to do anything. I would have been nice for the front desk person to even alert me of this. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Not the friendliest of places

Dec 13th, 2019

I checked in online but my room was not ready until about 4 p.m. even though check-in is officially 3 p.m. The room was a little short of amenities (such as drawers), but was fairly nice. The bed was lumpy and very uncomfortable. I found the female staff to be very friendly but some of the male staff at the front desk were a bit smug. Lastly, I had something delivered but the items were misplaced (even though the room number was on the label) and I did not receive them until a day later which negated their usefulness. My wife agrees with my assessment. We would not stay here again. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great long term stay!

Dec 2nd, 2019

Had a 5 night stay recently at the W Austin with me and my girlfriend. The staff was very friendly from the beginning and “Grayson” especially had some great tips and extra care for us that made the stay. The hotel ambiance was stylish and sexy and they even had a random salsa night that was so cool! One little hiccup was 1 day housekeeping did not get to the room even know we were gone all day / night and really hoping to come back to a clean and refreshed room; the hotel did offer apologies but some extra towels and water would of went a long way. All in all a good stay and would go back. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
