at the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian
A lovely stay with a few hiccups

Have stayed here before and certainly standard of rooms been maintained- lovely comer king deluxe room - very quiet and comfortable - most of the the staff go out of their way to be polite and helpful - was amused that the concierge watched me get out of the taxi and made no attempt to help with the suitcase perhaps he thought I did not look like a guest!! A great deal of effort has gone into the breakfast area - again very welcoming staff but there is a lack of cohesion and consistency - the staff whilst very willing fall over each other to help and being asked three times within seconds of each time what I wanted to drink - also listening skills and knowing the menu are not quite there yet - watched as numerous wrong items were brought to the table next to me which is a waste and frustrating ,another guest on the other side did not get the tea she wanted as they said they did not serve it but the day before I had, had the plate whisked away even before I had finished - these things are easily fixed and require a little more training. Great central location - spa service excellent TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

The Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh is everything a luxury hotel should be--classy, elegant decor with impeccable lighting, comfortable beds, perfect location, within walking distance to nearly all important nearby sights, flawlessly professional and charmingly warm staff--from the waiters, to the maids, bellmen, and counter people, and all necessary amenities, plus great food. Should be better....

I almost gave this hotel a 2-poor rating but talked myself into a 3-Average. We stayed 6 nights. This is in no way a 5 star hotel. It has great potential. The location is wonderful and the hotel has nice architecture. Our room had a nice view of the castle. The bathrooms have been remodeled with GREAT water pressure. The room is small which is to be expected in Europe, but the room was especially difficult to manuever. The closet was awkard and hard to access items, little drawer space, and utilizing your luggage as storage wasn't a good option because it was challenging to access it. The biggest complaint was the lack of air conditioning. With highs in the 70s I wouldn't have thought air conditioning would be such an issue but the room was very warm. It was difficult to sleep at night. When we called the desk they said they had recived several complaints. The walls are also very thin. We could hear every word of the family next door who also had early morning phone calls most every day. For the average room cost I just would expect more in the hotel and overall service. Mixed feelings-great service and location but below average overpriced room

Stayed 2 nights in a Jr Queen Suite castle view which we booked so our son could have a separate area for sleeping, I booked through Hilton and was told they could not guarantee connecting rooms so it seemed the best option. The first evening was so bad as to be almost funny. The evening we arrived was I believe the hottest day ever recorded in Edinburgh and our room (on 5th floor) was like an oven. We were exhausted from over 24 hours of traveling and immediately escaped down to the restaurant (the more casual dining option, excellent food) to cool off. Service started off great but after the entrees it went downhill fast, and it took forever it seemed to get the bill. Not great as we were so tired and just wanted to get to bed. The room was not much better when we got back up there despite the fans. At around 11pm when we had finally got to sleep there was a knock on the door, it was room service with ice (wrong room). Then an hour later the power went out in the room, without the fans blowing on us it was intolerable. Finally after about an hour the power came back on but by this point i was wide awake. I finally got to sleep again around 4:30 AM. On the second day I did ask if there was anything that could be done about the warmth in the rooms and here was where the good entered (besides location). They placed air conditioning units in each room and pumped the hot air out of the rooms. We slept much better the second night. The staff at front desk were generally terrific. This was meant to be a treat/ luxury stay and it failed utterly in terms of the room. But the hotel itself is beautiful and the location perfect. I would try it again personally but not in summer and not a 5th floor room. Room tip: Avoid Jr Queen and 1 bedroom suites, I confirmed all are on 5th floor, not worth the money. Call the helpful front desk staff directly to get connecting rooms on a lower floor if traveling with children. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Great Location & Castle View

We stayed here on my first trip to Edinburgh. The hotel is in a fantastic location and I had a room with a castle view (which was stunning). Very comfy beds and bed linen. Most importantly it was very clean. The hotel was not as good as I expected but it was still a lovely hotel. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
