The perfect hotel

First stay, unfortunately it short due to Covid-19. Will definitely revisit. Staff very pleasant, food good and location perfect. The child free zone is ideal, quiet and peaceful. Choice of restaurant s also good. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Second visit (so far!)

We arrived on 8th March for 2 weeks, staying across the road in the Spa area, as we did last year. It was amazing how many staff remembered us, which immediately put us in holiday mode. What we also found to our surprise were the number of guests that we met last year, who at also returned at the same time. The hotel is beautifully situated and the food in Seascape, Shiso and Kyma was plentiful and good quality - I pre-ordered lobster (24hrs notice required) at $75BBD which was delicious. However what continues to make this hotel extra special is its staff (Marriott - please don’t change that). We had our favourites but it would be unfair to name (many) individuals as everyone we dealt with was friendly and extremely helpful. This was particularly poignant as the Covid19 virus was hitting Barbados towards the end of our holiday and as a result, many of the staff were being laid off. We promised at the time that we would be back in 2021 and we intend to honour that commitment, to support the staff, hotel and the beautiful island of Barbados. Adieu and stay safe. We arrived at Waves a day after TUI Cruises were cancelled due to coronavirus and a day before TUI cancelled all package tours; we were required to return from our holiday a week in advance. Despite all of this uncertainty and the inherent impact on the hotel as they inevitably had to start laying off their staff, we had an amazing time. I would like to give heart-felt thanks to the wonderful staff at Waves - you are all so professional and despite what you were dealing with, you ensured we had a quality stay for the whole of our week. Coronavirus aside, we look forward to returning to Waves at some stage in the future. Everything was fabulous and we would totally recommend it. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Wonderful sea views

We spent 12 nights at Waves celebrating a wedding anniversary staying in a Ocean Front room. Overall it was a very enjoyable holiday with lots of very positive aspects. However we were paying a lot of money for the stay so I have reviewed it on the basis that we expected a wonderful experience and there were a few things that could have been better. The hotel is very well situated close to Bridgetown and has both a 'sea side' where we stayed and a 'spa side' (adults only) across the road. The sea side is literally right on the sea. The lounge and Seascape dining room have wonderful sea views and we had a superb sea view from our third floor balcony. The room was larger than expected (more a junior suite) and was well furnished with a huge bed. The bathroom was very well appointed but we were rather disappointed with the shower as the water temperature was inconsistent. The hotel is all inclusive and this includes all water sports, a number of Spa treatments and all meals and drinks. There is also complimentary use of a water taxi linking Waves with the other Elegant properties which you can visit and eat at. The beach is quite small and does shelve quite steeply but the loungers are comfortable and the service is reasonably attentive. One drawback is that a visit to the bathroom involves quite a long walk back into the hotel. The water sports are excellent (and underused when we stayed) and the staff running them very helpful. We tried several and would thoroughly recommend trying something new. There is a small and little used pool on the sea side of the hotel, but the main pool is on the spa side and is very pleasant. The spa itself is excellent and we were very impressed with the very good staff and with the treatments we tried. Worth booking early on your stay to get slots that suit. The water taxi service is very good - we spend days at Crystal Cove (nice beach) Tamarind (which we liked a lot - excellent lunch at their beach restaurant) and took the boat right up the the Colony Club and walked the relatively short (but hot) walk to Holetown. The drinks are pretty good quality and the house wine is okay but it costs a lot if you want to purchase wine not included. The evening entertainment is relatively low key but good quality and there are relatively few other organised activities. The hotel run a number of excursions which seem competitively priced . There are two restaurants - the Seascape restaurant (which is where breakfast is served as well as lunch and dinner), and Shiso which is a Asian more formal restaurant on the Spa side. There is also a coffee shop which serves 'snack' lunches and was rather underused when we were there. Breakfast was very good with reasonable choice (however there are a lot of birds in the restaurant which is open to the elements so if you have a bird phobia don't sit at the edge by the sea) Our main complaint was that you had to decide at breakfast where you wanted to eat that evening and at what time. This seemed a bit restrictive and if you turned up latish for breakfast as we tended to we found we had limited options (e.g. Shisho fully booked and only very late slots available in Seascape). The food itself was a little disappointing - the menu repeats every week and on two nights of the week there is a buffet and Shisho is shut. Lunch is also a buffet. They had made a good effort generally to cater for vegetarians but the vegetarian choice was sometimes very limited in the buffets. Some of the food was excellent, some of it rather average. Shisho had some excellent Sushi but some of the Asian dishes were of limited resemblance to the menu description. Most reviews have said the staff are wonderful. Many of them were certainly very friendly and tried very hard to be helpful. However some of the dinner service was a bit haphazard, and they didn't always seem to cope very well with the unexpected. We haven't stayed on Barbados before but it wasn't any different from our previous experience in the Caribbean. More generally get out and see the island and try the local buses which are a good experience. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

What a fantastic hotel

What can I say that all the other reviews have not already said? This is a fantastic hotel where all the staff go the extra mile to be friendly and help in any way they can. When you walk past a maintenance man and he stops to ask how you are and wish you a good day you know you are in the right place. Every member of staff was just so friendly and always had a smile and a laugh. The food is very good with the option of the coffee shop at lunchtime if the huge buffet is just too much. The beach is small but we had no problem getting a sun lounger with an umbrella. It was great to be served drinks and ice cream on the beach. The boat taxi/bus was great and stuck to the timetable and we were able to visit the other local properties. They were good but we always felt that we were coming home when the boat pulled up on our beach. Reggae music was playing in the background all the time which just added to the atmosphere. We are so sorry that this fantastic hotel has had to shut and we would love to return next year. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
