Lovely and unusual small quirky hotel near the action in San Francisco
Sep 18th, 2020
This was a two night pit-stop before embarking on a Round the Word trip of a lifetime on two different cruise-lines, (switching in Australia) We had been in the city only six months earlier when we had stayed in the very glamorous and luxurious Fairmont on Nob Hill. That was excellent but a bit of a steep trek to go anywhere on foot and not much in the immediate area... The White Swan Inn is an unusual find in an American city. It is a small hotel in the Nob Hill/Union Square area and coming from the UK, it felt very familiar, even down to the cheerful artificial fire in the bedroom. I loved the bookshelves stacked with books everywhere, a real home from home. Period features (every room had a fireplace apparently) plus wood paneling and warm old-fashioned carpets, with comfortable lounging furniture and seating areas, all decorated with nice paintings and interesting ornaments together added to the very homely feel. A nice buffet breakfast and glass of wine with cheeses and nibbles in the early evenings were all included. We had no idea that the Covid virus was already out there and that the world was closing in. Nice memories of a brief but very cosy stay. Highly recommend this place. It was also family friendly. The room didn't have a safe which worried us at first but there was a safety box system in the reception area which we used with no problems. We had four suitcases of rather heavy luggage with us for our (anticipated) three month RTW journey and the staff were really helpful with those. We didn't have to ask...they were also able to summon taxis at a moment's notice... TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Charming and Exceptional Service!
Jul 30th, 2020
This was the most charming hotel I have ever stayed at. From the lift, to every detail in the room, to the downstairs sitting and dining area it was all just lovely. The service was unbelievably helpful and friendly, and the breakfast (especially during covid) was beyond our expectations. We without a doubt will return. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

A Cozy and Quirky Staycation during Quarantine
Jun 27th, 2020
As someone who lives in the city, I don't normally think about booking a hotel here; however, with my original plans for my birthday dampened by the pandemic, I stumbled upon this place when planning a solo staycation. The place is easy enough to spot with the large British flag waving on Bush Street. Upon arrival, the staff were quick to welcome me and were all friendly and helpful throughout my stay. The entire space has a British vibe in its themed design, the old elevator adding some vintage-ness to the hotel’s personality. The room, a deluxe queen with fireplace, was spacious yet comfortable; I especially liked that it had a bathtub and that the bed was incredibly soft. A short walk away is the Grace Cathedral, which has an outdoor prayer labyrinth. Also nearby is a park, two classic San Francisco hotels (the Fairmont and the Intercontinental Mark), and some decent views of the city. For tourists, this location is also fairly close to Union Square. Farther neighborhoods of interest can be easily visited by catching the cable car on California Street, which usually sees less action than those that pickup from the Powell Street turnaround. Another note for visitors: San Francisco is pretty overcast and cool for most of the year and, as such, a lot of older/smaller buildings like the White Swan Inn don't have air conditioning. My stay was during one of SF's rare super warm weeks and it was quite hot being on the top floor; however, I didn't mind it much with the windows open. Rest assured, I made note of an electric fan in the closet. While the nightly rate is a tad out of my usual budget, I feel the value is excellent. What sold me was all the complimentary things included with my stay, even with COVID19 safety precautions in place: bottled water all day by request, sodas in the hotel room fridge, wine and nibbles each night, and a decent sized breakfast each morning. I enjoyed my wine and my breakfast in a staff member’s favorite (and now my favorite!) spot in the lounge area — the library, which stays in theme with its decor of miniature models of UK churches. It was truly a cozy and quirky spot to enjoy my complimentary munchies. I’m grateful the White Swan Inn was open and that its space and staff contributed in my celebrating my quarantine birthday. I hope to return and experience the French theming of their sister hotel next door when it reopens and to make a staycation at either place a recurring treat. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Amazing Hotel That Took Great Care of Me Throughout The Pandemic
Jun 26th, 2020
I just stayed at this hotel a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it! My room was very clean and the employees were all very friendly. They are doing a great job with the circumstances. I love the warm feel of the hotel. The decor is very nice and I felt safe and healthy. Bottles of hand sanitizer were available as well as other accommodations. I would definitely recommend this hotel and will stay again when I am back in SF! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
