Good place in a good location at a good price - just no freebies

Aug 13th, 2019

I’ve stayed at innumerable motels next to expressway off-ramps, as well as quite a few places near a city’s downtown or transit center. However, this is the first time I’ve stayed at lodging in the middle of a medical center. I’m happy to say it worked quite well. We chose the Wyndham Garden for our three-night stay in Buffalo due to a listing showing a good price for a place fairly close to downtown. When we approached its location, we were a bit confused, as every block around it was a medical facility of some kind. I actually thought I had read my map wrong, but my smart phone map app showed I was just half a block away. I literally drove right by it, not noticing that this was a hotel, not a hospital wing, until my second drive down this block. So don’t worry if the street doesn’t look like hotel row – it isn’t! Parking is the first thing you need to know about this place, as your options are (1) valet parking for about $20 a day, (2) parking on High Street itself, which is $1 per hour with a two hour maximum (cash ONLY in the kiosk, and I’m not sure if night parking is free), (3) parking on adjacent Michigan Avenue, which is $3 for ten hours (same comment), and (4) parking at a commercial lot a couple blocks away, which was $9 for up to 24 hours, with credit cards accepted. When you arrive, you can stop at the valet area for free while you unload your belongings, and even while you take them to your room if you give them your car key. This worked fine for us. Our room had a full bath, AC, phone, fridge, microwave, hair dryer, iron & board, coffee maker, in-room safe, and TV with 110 channels. Bizarrely, I had to adjust the input every time I turned on the TV, as it kept defaulting to analog reception (ie, no reception). Figuring that a few buttons would solve this, I mentioned this to the front desk, who quickly sent a maintenance person to our room. After 90 minutes of effort, he was not able to solve the problem, so I simply spent ten seconds adjusting the input a few times a day. The front desk offered to put us in another room, but that would have taken far more time than simply hitting a few buttons. I hope this gets fixed. Other than the TV, the room was clean, quiet, and well-maintained. Staff was friendly and professional. Freebies included a workout room and good (but not great) wifi. There is a restaurant at this hotel, but no free breakfast. Because the hotel is surrounded by medical facilities, there are no restaurants or shops nearby, unless you want to enter a hospital, and buy some food there. There are, however, innumerable restaurants a short drive away – including the famous Anchor Restaurant. Two blocks away is the subway station that will allow you to get downtown quickly, easily, and with all-day rides for $5 a person (again, cash ONLY). Various other sites worth a look (Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo Zoo, Woodlawn Cemetery, Roosevelt Inaugural National Site, etc) are just north of this place. In other words, it’s nicely located. If you can accept that certain things are NOT free at this Wyndham, it’s location and luxury make it a wonderful place for enjoying Buffalo for several days. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Friendly staff

My husband and I visited Buffalo for a wedding. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. They had a safe, coffee maker, mini fridge and microwave. We enjoyed our stay very much. While you are near various hospitals, there is a free shuttle service that runs all day and will take you all around downtown buffalo. The staff was wonderful. Everyone from the front desk staff to the valet to the shuttle driver gave us the impression they were willing to go above and beyond for their guests. Though we probably could have paid slightly less for a cheaper hotel, the service at this one made me want to come back. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great stay in downtown!

Rooms were clean. Food was great for breakfast. Staff was super, especially the Mgr. Randy. Only slight would be the need for better parking. They do have Valet, but there’s a cost. Enjoyed our time here and would return. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Centrally located in close proximity to hospitals. Extremely polite and knowledgeable staff. I highly recommend this hotel. Very clean and professionally managed property. Service and staff are second to none. I regularly stay there and consistently find this to be the case, TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
