Time Machine Back to the 1970s

Jul 16th, 2019

Stay Report - 7/12 - 7/13 Location: Despite its name, the hotel is actually located in South Portland.  It's across the street from the Maine Mall which means you can walk to a ton of stores and restaurants (there's a Longhorn Steakhouse, Uno's, IHOP, Chilis and many, many other chains within an easy walk of the hotel.  It's also very close to PWM (2 miles) and fairly close to Downtown Portland (7 miles).  By being next to I-95 and I-295 it's easy to get around from here. Hotel: The hotel itself is ancient.  It was built in the early 70s and was the Sheraton Portalnd until 2007 and then it was a Wyndham.  This is sadly typical of how Doubletrees become Doubletrees.  The design is pure 70s, two round towers, a main one which contains the lobby and a bar and restaurant and a smaller ancillary tower. Check In: Really cold service when I arrived at 10:30 PM.  No elite recognition, when I asked how breakfast worked I was told "6 to 11".  I had to ask where it would be and what it was.  I asked about a lounge and was told it was open afternoons.  No idea where it was.  No upgrade of course. Room: Old like the rest of the hotel.  The circular tower design means the room has an odd layout and shape.  The bathroom is ridiculously tiny while the bedroom ends up with a lot of dead space.  There's no central AC and the windowbox unit was really loud.  Thankfully Wifi worked pretty well and there were outlets near the bed.  Breakfast: Full breakfast buffet in the restaurant downstairs.  Usual scrambled eggs, scrambled eggs with peppers and onions, sausage, bacon, potatoes and cold items and breads. I stayed here because it was 40,000 points which for Portland in the summer isn't bad.  The hotel is ancient and aging badly but for a quick overnight it's fine.  TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Good hotel but getting worn & in need of renovations

Jul 12th, 2019

The hotel is well located close to the highway, shops, and the airport, however, we found the room to be small and the whole property in need of an upgrade. Despite being a Diamond member, no upgrade was available and we were disappointed to find out that the executive lounge (which we never actually saw) is closed on the weekends as this was a big reason we decided to stay here. As I said, the room was a bit cramped, and the hallways worn and its appearance was not assisted by used room service trays which were visible almost every time we left/arrived to our room. However, the pool is large, there was plenty of parking, and a starbucks close by. Breakfast was acceptable and the fitness centre serviceable. If the price is right, I would stay here again. Portland Maine hotel

Jul 12th, 2019

Nice hotel, easy to find from airport. We spent most of our time in the old port area. This hotel was within a 15 min drive. Breakfast was more than adequate, the night bar tender, Libby was very knowledgeable and helpful with questions & directions. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Nice place to stay in Portland area!

Jul 11th, 2019

My family comes to Portland during the first week in July for the Lobsterfest youth ice hockey tournament. This hotel has completely turned around its performance from last year. Staff were caring and provided excellent service! Most rooms have been updated nicely! Food was very good! Hotel was pet friendly but didn't look or smell like it! My only two complaints were: (1) The pool deck area was too steamy on the first day of our visit, but this was corrected by Day 2. (2) I would have liked the price point for this property to have been around $175 per night rather than $300+ per night. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Accommodating, friendly, great value!

They were able to meet our request to check in early and even when I called to confirm, they had an alternative solution if our room was not ready upon our arrival. We didn't need to go with that option because we were able to check in early when we did arrive. Cookies live up to the hype! Warm, fresh and so good! Staff was very friendly! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
