Culinary perfection

Jul 17th, 2019

This was our fourth stay in the penthouse suite, so we're used to the hotel and what to expect. This time, however, we were in for a surprise. Our experience has always been good; the front office staff are generally exceptional and will go out of their way to help, no matter what you need. Marriott staff are, in our experience, delightful anyway, but we were unprepared for what happened when we ordered room service on the first evening. Hotel food is generally not that wonderful, but we decided to stay in that first night and order from the room service menu. The food was delivered on time and was nothing special. That was, until we tried it. Their current chef had produced a Pizza that was unlike anything we'd eaten before. In fact, I'd not realised that a simple pizza could taste so wonderful. It wasn't just the pizza; everything we ate was full of flavour and, on the second night, the food was every bit as wonderful. It's so good that if we lived in the area we could easily end up eating there most nights. It's very hard to pick holes in the Marriott's current offering at this hotel. The food is the most flavourful we've ever eaten, the staff are wonderful - every one of them and - despite the distance we have to walk from the entrance to the lifts to the suite - the place offers superb value for a short break in York. Its position out of town in a semi-rural setting makes this a hotel in which parking is very simple, the views across the racecourse are delightful and it's unreservedly recommended for a short break. Great location in leafy suburb of York

Jul 16th, 2019

My wife and I booked this hotel as previously when we visited York we had stayed at hotels within the city walls and arriving by car found this to be very difficult to navigate, so the criteria this time was that we wanted a hotel that was easily accessed, had car parking and also had a pool, so the York Marriott ticked these boxes...and the parking was free. We did book one of their rooms which had a grandstand balcony and a view over the racecourse, even though there wasn't any racing on when we visited, but the outlook was spectacular and as we were at the far end of the hotel, it was blissfully quiet. The room was enormous, as was the bed and was well fitted out and had a small frig which was good just for chilling water and a safe to lock away valuables. The bathroom had a bath with shower above as well as a separate shower enclosure so was of a good size to accommodate all the facilities. Both the room and bathroom were clean and well serviced during our stay We had included breakfast in our package and this was one of the tastiest cooked breakfasts that I have had and with plenty of choice. We also ate in the dining room and bar on four of the nights that we stayed and found the quality of food to be good and prices for food and drinks to be reasonable. I used the leisure facilities and whilst the swimming pool is not large enough for the serious swimmer, it certainly allows you to get in a few lengths before dinner so that you can justify a pudding. The steam room and sauna are good as was the whirl pool and there is also a small children's pool. Changing facilities are small and shared by those using the gym but seemed to cope well when I used it. I did walk into York and it took 20 mins along what is a nice leafy suburb of York (Dringhouses), albeit is was a busy road and was quite noisy, but this only took me to the Micklegate and there was another 10 minutes or so to walk before I got to the city centre and main attractions. We used the bus on other occasions and the charge was only £1.80 for an adult single journey and there were bus stops outside the hotel Staff in all departments were well trained, efficient and pleasant to deal with and we would certainly return here if visiting York again. Some may say that the hotel is a wee bit dated and showing signs of wear in some places, but this is really only a very minor comment as we found it to be be more than adequately fitted out for us to have a very pleasant stay TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Perfect location

Jul 14th, 2019

We had a 1 night stay on Friday evening and I have to say the reception staff were delightful. The room was pristine not luxurious but more than adequate for a city hotel. Breakfast was lovely and the location was perfect to walk to the racecourse. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Outside town but well run establishment

Jul 12th, 2019

Classic Marriott style. Well run, good food, responsive. Only downside is location depending on your preferences. If you are using the hotel as a layover for a visit to York its a long walk from city centre. You might need a cab. Otherwise, very nice facility. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Bad customer service in a dated hotel

Jul 12th, 2019

Arrived at the hotel to be told that there was no booking in our name. Even though we had a confirmation email. Had to wait over half an hour in the bar (was not even offered a drink while waiting) to get told we could now have some rooms. We asked the manager to communicate with booking.com as to what went wrong as he was trying to blame them (which was not the case). This was completely ignored and the manager when we arrived back the next day had no idea about our issue. The rooms are dated and look not looked after well my room had both a broken bath tap and damage to the walls all over the place. Would not recommend staying in this hotel at all.
