Midtown Manhattan's golden Peninsula calls itself a "cocoon of peace and quiet" amid the fray on Fifth Avenue. And recent travelers agree, though they contend that it's an expensive cocoon. Highlights include free internet access, the rooftop terrace Salon de Ning (which offers stunning city views) and a highly acclaimed spa and health club. But that's not all this ultra-luxurious hotel has going for it. Previous visitors cited the top-notch service, spectacular vistas and enviable location (just steps away from Central Park and Rockefeller Center) as equally compelling reasons to return. Others described the property as elegant and serene, praising the hotel's calming color palette and extra touches found in each of the accommodations, such as stocked minibars, marble baths, cozy robes and slippers, and sleek flat-screen TVs. Recent visitors also raved about the delectable dishes and sophisticated atmosphere offered at the hotel's dining establishments, the Clement Restaurant and the Gotham Lounge.

The Dominick Hotel is all about customer service. Many recent guests say the staff at this property will stop at nothing to serve visitors, whether that means ordering signature stationery or offering room upgrades. And speaking of which, the hotel's 391 rooms aren't too shabby either. With art deco decor, floor-to-ceiling windows and deep soaking tubs, many travelers are hard-pressed to find a reason to leave. Though some guests did lament the missing bathroom door in some accommodation options, noting the hotel's style choice was not very practical. The hotel is also home to a spa and a few dining options, including Mezzanine for elegant American fare. Plus, right outside the hotel's doors is the eclectic South of Houston neighborhood, filled with trendy boutiques and art galleries.

The Mirbeau has a French aesthetic, taking its design cues from the Old World wine country. Stone turrets adorn the main inn, while four cheery yellow cottages cluster around the pond. The gardens are also reminiscent of France, modeled after Claude Monet's infamous gardens at Giverny. Naturally, the Mirbeau is a favorite with couples thanks to top-notch amenities like the 14,000-square-foot spa and its various treatments. (Some do note, though, that services can be rather pricey.) Recent guests also say that the accommodations are charming, with cozy fireplaces and oversized soaking tubs. Previous visitors compliment the cuisine served in the Dining Room and the Aqua Terrace, as well the extensive selection at the Wine Bar. TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 344 reviewsTripAdvisor (344)

As you walk inside the Four Seasons Hotel New York, you might feel like you're entering a certain famous museum in Paris. After all, the opulent art deco lobby with its onyx ceiling was designed by I.M. Pei (you may have seen his pyramidal work outside the Louvre). This Four Seasons rises 52 stories high and holds 368 rooms and suites, including one of the most expensive guest rooms in America. You can unwind after a day of sightseeing with a cocktail in hand at the hotel's super-swanky and recently renovated bar, Ty Bar. Or, if you're hungry, indulge your taste buds with delectable cuisine at one of the Big Apple's top-rated restaurants pioneered by executive chef John Johnson, The Garden. According to some recent guests, this resort-casino megaplex – run by the Oneida American Indian tribe – easily rivals some of the sprawling properties in Las Vegas. Rather than in Vegas, you'll find Turning Stone in Verona, New York, on Patrick Road, just off of State Route 365. This hotel's name says it all. Situated in Tarrytown, New York, this unique lodging is literally a castle perched on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. Constructed in 1910, the original building echoes the Norman castles of the British Isles, with epic stone walls and turrets, as well as wood paneling said to have belonged to King James II of England. And while this hotel's exterior exudes an Old World charm, the accommodations are updated with luxurious 21st century conveniences, including Tivoli Radio & Bose Sound systems, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, goose-down bed spreads and even fireplaces (in some rooms). The customer service, though, receives mixed reviews: Some recent guests said that they felt like royalty during their stay, while others said that staff seemed confused and could benefit from some additional training. Overlooking Lexington Avenue in midtown Manhattan, this hotel is just a short walk from the shopping on Fifth Avenue and the entertainment at Radio City Music Hall, as well as some of the city's other popular attractions. Many describe the guest rooms as small and sparse, though some give a big thumbs-up to the beds. Accommodations also come equipped with flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations and Bliss toiletries. Guests also expressed mixed feelings about the customer service: Some describe the staff as friendly and helpful, while others cite their slow pace as a turnoff. Part of the sky-high One57 building, the Park Hyatt New York is one of the newest five-star properties in the Big Apple. First opened in August 2014, the hotel houses 210 spacious rooms, including 92 suites, outfitted with natural stone floors, minibars and Nespresso coffee makers, as well as dual-sink bathrooms with separate soaking tubs and rainfall showers. Each accommodation also features techie touches, including a TV built into the bathroom mirror. When it's time to disconnect and unwind, guests can get a treatment at the on-site Spa Nalai, then take advantage of the hot tub, steam room or indoor swimming pool. The hotel is also home to the Livint Room, a cozy bar and restaurant. Recent guests raved about the large, well-decorated guest rooms, the friendly staff and the hotel's prime location on West 57th Street, just south of Central Park and across the street from Carnegie Hall. However, some visitors note that because the hotel occupies the first 25 floors of the 90-story building, some of the rooms' views are less than stellar. (Try to book an accommodation on the 19th floor or above, facing midtown Manhattan for the best panorama.) Rates are on the pricey side, but because the hotel falls under the Hyatt umbrella, brand loyalty members are able to earn and redeem points to offset the cost.

    4.5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4.5 based on 3175 reviewsTripAdvisor (3175)

Love the Roaring '20s? Then midtown East's The Benjamin is the perfect hotel for you. Upon walking through the elegant marble-decked lobby, you'll be transported to another era. But don't worry: Despite its retro decor, you'll find plenty of modern amenities here. For example, The Benjamin offers guests a pillow menu with 10 choices on it, a spa and a bistro restaurant named The National. Though some recent guests lamented that the accommodations lean toward the smaller side, most applaud the hotel's prime location, impeccable service and luxurious extras, including Egyptian cotton linens, minifridges and HD flat-screen TVs.

    New York, NY
    4.5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 2130 reviewsTripAdvisor (2130)

Formerly the Jumeirah Essex House, this elegant property has been transformed into an indulgent retreat, enhanced with an art deco design blended with modern accents. Accommodations feature signature Marriott amenities, including flat-screen TVs, pillow-top mattresses, iPod docking stations and Wi-Fi access (for $16.95 per day). But what steals the spotlight here is the impressive views and easy access to iconic Manhattan attractions, including Central Park, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Recent visitors said the hotel is still working out a few kinks, such as missing in-suite coffee makers; however, most described the hotel staff as extremely friendly and accommodating. Previous patrons also give kudos to the tasty seasonal American cuisine dished up at SOUTHGATE Bar & Restaurant. Another bonus: If you participate in Marriott's rewards program, you may accrue or redeem points by choosing to bed down here.
