    Fogo Island Inn
    Joe Batt's Arm
    5-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 5 based on 456 reviewsTripAdvisor (456)
    Free Parking
    Free WiFi

Fogo Island Inn isn't your average hotel. The inn, which is held up by stilts so as not to damage the rocky topography it sits on, features a contemporary, almost futuristic architectural design that seems at odds with the centuries-old fishing village it occupies. Because of the inn's remote location on Fogo Island (situated off the northeast coast of Newfoundland, Canada), the property cultivates a familial, intimate atmosphere that recent guests loved. You won't find much in the surrounding area, but the inn provides all the unique amenities you could need for a relaxing, secluded getaway. In addition to a fitness center, the Fogo Island Inn offers a rooftop deck with wood-fired saunas and two outdoor hot tubs, a 37-seat theater, a small art gallery, a library, a lounge and bar and a restaurant with vaulted ceilings and dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows. Aside from the amenities, it was the inn's 29 suites that really impressed visitors, who called a stay at the property a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience. Rooms are outfitted with floor-to-ceiling windows (perfect for admiring the ocean views), natural wood floors with in-floor heating, heated towel racks and heated toilet seats with a built-in bidet, among other amenities. The only gripe among lodgers? A stay here does not come cheap.

Previous visitors don't mind the Fox Harb'r Resort's remote Wallace, Nova Scotia, location. In fact, many guests said the resort's scenic location and quiet ambiance are some of its greatest allures. Golfers can tee off on the Graham Cooke-designed championship course, while nature-seekers hike along scenic trails in the Wallace Bay National Wildlife Area Trail (about 8 miles southeast of the resort) or discover Nova Scotia by sea on a boating tour. Meanwhile, those looking for an extra dose of relaxation can indulge in a replenishing massage or lounge by the resort's mineral pool and hot tub. Afterward, retreat to your well-appointed accommodations, which are outfitted with kitchennettes, heated granite bathroom floors, Molton Brown bath products and terraces or balconies. However, some visitors were not satisfied with the cuisine served at The Great Room, describing it as unimaginative and overpriced.

    Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel
    Halifax, CA
    4-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 1422 reviewsTripAdvisor (1422)
    Free WiFi

This Marriott outpost boasts a prime location on Halifax Harbour, within close proximity to the waterfront's bars, restaurants and shopping venues. Guests also praise this Marriott's proximity to the Casino Nova Scotia, which is connected to the hotel via an indoor skyway. Inside the hotel, the refurbished lobby wins guests over with its sleek, modern decor. The hotel's guest rooms and suites, on the other hand, seem to still need an update – travelers describe the rooms' brown and red color schemes as drab compared to the bright white furnishings of the lobby. Each room features a minifridge, a 25-inch flat-screen TV and complimentary Internet access. As for dining, you can order room service from the on-site restaurant, the harbourstone sea grill & pour house or venture to the nearby eateries located on the waterfront. Feel free to stick close to the hotel for your daily caffeine fix, though; there's Balancing Rock Coffeehouse on-site, which serves Starbucks coffee. Thanks to the property's Marriott ties, Marriott Bonvoy members can earn free nights and other perks for choosing to stay here.

    The Westin Nova Scotian
    Halifax, CA
    4-star HOTEL CLASS
TripAdvisor Traveler Rating 4 based on 2005 reviewsTripAdvisor (2005)
    Free WiFi

With its waterfront location, The Westin Nova Scotian is perfectly located for travelers looking to explore Halifax's maritime sites, including the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. But what visitors love the most about this Westin is its dedication to quality customer service. Many previous guests praised the friendly demeanor of the Westin's staff. After enjoying some sightseeing, retreat to your comfortable accommodations, furnished with a signature Heavenly Bed, 32-inch LCD TV and complimentary Internet access. Though some guests did describe the bathrooms as slightly cramped, most praised the rooms for being clean and spacious. Past visitors also recommended sampling the food at the Westin's two restaurants, Roy's Lounge and elements on hollis, which serves up classic dishes with a twist (think: salmon over a cucumber and watercress with kale chips). And because this hotel is part of the Marriott hotel family, Marriott Bonvoy members can earn and use points here.

Recent guests say the best thing about this Sheraton is its location in historic St. John's, the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. The hotel sits within close proximity to businesses, shops and restaurants. The Sheraton offers a variety of room options, with views of the city or St. John's Harbour. Rooms come equipped with Sheraton's signature Sweet Sleeper beds, turndown service and complimentary Internet access. However, some guests note parts of the hotel have fallen into disrepair and could use a facelift. Reviews of the on-site restaurant, OPPIDAN, are also mixed, with some guests recommending you dine off site. On a positive note, the Sheraton also offers the bivver lounge where you can grab some light fare and a cocktail before exploring St. John's. The hotel also offers a pool and fitness center, but guests say both eateries are on the smaller side. And because this hotel is part of the Marriott hotel family, Marriott Bonvoy members can earn and use points here.
