Best Times to Visit Houston

The best time to visit Houston is from February to April or from September to November. Thanks to its close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, Houston experiences warm weather (as well as affordable hotel prices) pretty much year-round, but come spring and fall the temperatures are pleasant and there are a variety of festivals to enjoy. You may be able to score a deal in the summer since Houston residents head elsewhere as temperatures climb, but you'll have to contend with the heat and oppressing humidity. Houston also experiences mild winters and snowfall is rare, but temperatures drop when the sun goes down so make sure to pack layers if you're traveling in December or January.

February-April

Temperatures range from the mid-60s to the upper 70s this time of year, which is ideal weather for enjoying Houston's outdoor attractions like the zoo and Buffalo Bayou. Travelers can also enjoy the city's tastiest food and drink eateries' outdoor patios or catch a ball game starting in April at Minute Maid Park. Houston's largest event is also in March: the Livestock Show and Rodeo, which brings thousands of visitors to town. Expect hotel prices to skyrocket for most weekends in March.

Key events:

May-August

Summers in Houston are hot, humid and sticky, so much so that it earned the nickname the "most air-conditioned city in America." Highs remain in the low to upper 90s, with a few days seeing triple-digit temps. That, paired with the fact that Houston is one of the muggiest cities in the USA, means you should be prepared to sweat. The pros? You'll be able to pack light for a visit during the months of May through August, and you're more likely to find a deal. The cons? The scorching heat, for one, and the frequent afternoon thunderstorms, some of which can turn severe and include varied precipitation like hail.

Key events:

September-November

Fall brings a welcome reprieve from the sweltering heat, as high temperatures rest around the 70s to 80s, with lows falling to the 60s. You should keep in mind that hurricane season stretches into the fall, and the Galveston and Houston areas have been hit by damaging storms. Since this is a popular time to visit Houston, hotel deals may be harder to come by, so try to book several weeks in advance.

Key events:

December-January

December and January are the coldest months in Houston, though temperatures rarely dive below freezing. With highs in the mid-60s, the winter is still a solid time to visit the city and enjoy its top attractions. There are fewer festivals this time of year  the ones held usually relate to the holidays  but that means you should easily be able to find affordable lodging.
