Best Times to Visit Juneau

The best time to visit Juneau is between May and August. You'll have to compete with hordes of cruise passengers at the area's top attractions, but the days will be long and sunny. Plus, these months correspond with whale migration season, meaning you're guaranteed to see some activity in the water. Many businesses and popular attractions close after the summer season, but if you're not afraid of the cold, a trip in the offseason (September through April) could save you a bundle on airfare, lodging and souvenirs.

For many travelers (especially first-timers), this may seem like the only time to visit Juneau. Temperatures aren't hot (average highs hover in the mid-60s), but the days are sunny and long. June 21 is the longest day of the year, with 18 hours and 18 minutes of daylight (compare that to December 21, when the city sees just six hours and 21 minutes of daylight). Along with the comfortable temps, the area's top attractions, including the Mount Roberts Tramway and the Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventures, are open for business. The only downside: prices for airfare and lodging will likely be high this time of year. Even if Juneau is only a port of call for you, expect crowds everywhere you go.

Key Events:

With a visit in early fall, you can still enjoy the city (at reasonable rates) before it empties out for the winter low season. However, September and October experience the most precipitation; come prepared for cloudy, rainy days. Though some Juneau businesses retreat into hibernation after the summer high season, there are some advantages to visiting during this chilly time of year (lows hover in the upper 20s). Without all the crowds, you'll be able to enjoy Juneau's snowy landscape in peace while you're skiing, heli-skiing or dog sledding. This is also the best time to spot the otherworldly Northern Lights. Plus, since demand is low, there will likely be deals on lodging and airfare. If you're nervous about the cold, just remember that winter in Juneau is still warmer than winter in Midwest cities like Minneapolis and Chicago.
