Best Times to Visit Lake George

The best time to visit Lake George is from May to September when the area experiences pleasant temperatures and visitors can enjoy the numerous outdoor activities, events and festivals. Highs during this period rest in the 70s and low 80s, making it the perfect time to go hiking and biking, and to explore the lake. October to November is another nice time to visit: Travelers will be greeted with striking fall foliage as the leaves turn from green to shades of amber, orange and crimson. The months of December to February are downright cold, with average temperatures in the 20s and 30s. However, there are a few winter activities and festivals you can enjoy during these months. The spring is often chilly as well (temps range from the 20s to the high 50s in March and April), but if you don't mind a few extra layers, it can be a great time to enjoy the outdoors without encountering as many crowds as you might in the summer.

March-April

Although it can be chilly in the spring, the sun is usually shining and the area does not see much rainfall this time of year. You can expect average temperatures to hover around the 30s to 50s, so you'll want to pack plenty of layers to be prepared for whatever the forecast has in store. Because the weather is on the cooler side, it's not as popular of a time to visit – that means you'll likely have more of the trails and top attractions to yourself, and you're more likely to find a deal on accommodations than you would in the summer.

Key Events:

  • Thurman Maple Days (March)
May-September

Summertime is the prime time to visit Lake George, thanks to beautiful weather and an abundance of outdoor activities and festivals to enjoy. Average temperatures range from the 60s to the 70s, with highs in the low 80s in July and August. The months of May and September are also sweet spots with great weather and slightly fewer crowds than in the peak months of June to August. Because this is the most popular time to visit, accommodations – from hotels to vacation rentals – book up quickly. Make sure to reserve your lodging at least six to nine months (if not more) in advance.

Key Events:

  • Elvis Festival (June)
  • LARAC Arts Festival (June)
  • Adirondack Food & Wine Festival (June)
  • Lake George Music Festival (September)
  • Adirondack Nationals Car Show (September)
October-November

Fall in Lake George is cool and crisp – and it descends on the region quickly. While September highs are still in the high 60s and 70s, October typically sees temperatures range from the 30s to low 60s and November's temperatures range from as low as the 20s to the high 40s. You'll want to make sure to bring layers of clothing since there's such a wide range of possible forecasts, and you may even encounter snow. However, if you don't mind the varying temps, you'll be rewarded with beautiful changing leaves. A few popular events happen this time of year as well.

Key Events:

  • World's Largest Garage Sale (October)
  • Lake George Oktoberfest & Fall Festival (October)
December-February

Wintertime in this region is pretty cold and you can expect quite a few bouts of snow – the area gets about 63 inches of snowfall on average annually. But the abundance of snow means you can take advantage of cold weather activities like skiing, ice fishing, ice skating and snowmobiling. As for temperatures, highs rarely surpass the low 30s – so you'll need to bring plenty of warm clothing to bundle up, and bring gear like snow jackets, boots, gloves, hats and scarves for outdoor activities. Another reason to visit in the winter: Lake George hosts many festive events and pop-up ice bars are popular with those looking for a unique spot to grab a drink and embrace the cold.

Key Events:

  • Lite Up the Village (December)
  • North Country Festival of Trees (December)
