Best Times to Visit Lake Tahoe

The best times to visit Lake Tahoe are from March to May and from September to November, but the area welcomes visitors throughout the year thanks to the wide variety of attractions and activities. With warmer weather comes beachcombers: In July and August, Tahoe's shores are lined with oversized umbrellas and sun-drenched kids. There's a small break in tourist activity during the fall, but as the temperatures decline, visitors re-emerge with skis in hand, ready to tackle the powder. Traveling in March or November specifically will allow you to experience the area at a fraction of the price.

With temperatures steadily on the rise (from the high 40s to the low 60s), spring marks Lake Tahoe's transition from skiing mecca to beach destination. During this in-between time, crowds are fewer and prices are lower. Plus, you might be lucky enough to catch a few lingering snowflakes still on the slopes.

Key Events:

Summer is the most popular time to visit Lake Tahoe. Thanks to temperatures in the high 70s, the trails are ready to be hiked, the beaches are ready to be dozed upon and the lake is ready to be paddled. Prepare yourself for large crowds and soaring prices on any given weekend (you might save some money by traveling during the week). Make sure you book at least three months in advance to ensure availability.

Key Events:

As temperatures drop (from the low 70s to the high 40s), so do prices. The region witnesses a significant tourism slump as the kids go back to school and the wind begins to bite. Visit during late September to catch the last few days of trailblazing, or aim for late November to get a jump on ski season.

Key Events:

Believe it or not, Lake Tahoe snowy winters aren't that bad thanks to average highs in the low 40s. So whether you've come to shred some powder or simply to enjoy the view, winter is a great time to visit. However, you won't be the only one looking to cash in on the weather: Expect crowds to multiply and prices to rise (although you can avoid both of these by visiting during the week). And to prepare for this busy season, consider booking at least a few months in advance.
