Best Times to Visit Lyon

The best time to visit Lyon is in September and October when the city empties of its summertime tourists, leaving behind crisp, cool autumn weather and colorful foliage. The months between November and April, while the coldest and darkest, are the best times to find deals on airfare or accommodations. May is another excellent month to visit, thanks to comfortable temperatures, while summertime's June, July and August are peak season in Lyon.

September-October

Autumn is a lovely time to visit Lyon. High average temperatures linger between the 60s and 70s, making it very comfortable for meandering Lyon's neighborhoods or attempting the climb up Fourvière. Plus, the city's trees have started changing color.

Key Events:

November-April

From November to April, Lyon experiences average temperatures in the 30s to 50s, and the fewest hours of sunshine of the year. Still, if visitors don't mind bundling up, winter can be a great season to explore the city without the high prices or high crowds of other seasons.

Key Events:

May

May is another nice time to travel to Lyon, when high averages top out in the upper 60s and tourists haven't yet inundated the city's hotels and attractions.

Key Events:

June-August

Summer is peak travel season in Lyon, and average high temperatures are at their year-round high as well, hovering between the 70s and 80s. July is usually the warmest of all three, but the whole season is characterized by lots of sunshine. Since summer is when tourists usually pack the city, visitors will be hard-pressed to find deals during these months.
