Best Times to Visit Marseille

The best time to visit Marseille is from September to November, when tourists visiting during the peak season of May to August have returned home, freeing up the beaches, attractions and accommodations. The months that run from December to March are low season, characterized by average temps in the 40s and an emptied-out city. April is another nice time of year, where travelers may see discounted rates on flights and rooms, along with pleasant weather and relatively thin crowds.

Average highs in the fall drift from the upper 70s to the upper 50s – and as the temps drop, so do the levels of tourists, which means rates on flights and accommodations are some of the least expensive of the year.

December-March

Although the South of France does have a dry, Mediterranean climate, that's not to say it's balmy in the winter. Average highs during these four months hover in the mid-50s, while average lows fall to the 30s. Still, if you want to explore the city without a lot of other tourists or the high prices of summertime, winter is a good time to come. Yet, keep in mind that this time of year is prone to high winds, referred to as le mistral, especially during the transition from winter to spring.

April

By April, average highs are in the mid-60s, but travelers haven't yet inundated the city, driving up prices on accommodations or clogging attractions. Still, le mistral’s high winds might be blowing through Marseille during this month, so you'll want to pack some warm layers to combat the chilly gusts.

May-August

Starting in May, Marseille sees an uptick in travelers, and these high levels of tourism last until August. But it's easy to see why: Temps that rise from the 70s to the 80s make boating, beaching and other outdoor activities ideal. But the ideal weather comes with a price tag: visitors will notice higher prices on hotels and airfare during this time of year.
