Best Times to Visit Normandy

The best time to visit Normandy is June to August. Though this is the height of the peak tourist season – which can last from May to mid-October – this period also promises the most pleasant weather. Fall and spring can be optimal shoulder seasons if you're hoping for fewer crowds and better accommodation rates, but a visit during this time will likely require coats (highs hover around the 50s). Winter will usher in the best hotel rates, but some of the businesses in the region's small towns and cities will likely close up shop for the season. Plus, some of the region's top museums close for the month of January.

March-May

High average temperatures this time of year range from the 50s to the low 60s, so you'll need to pack some warm clothes. If you don't mind the cool temps, you'll be rewarded with an explosion of spring flowers across the region. European Night of Museums, a popular event in which participating museums offer free admission, occurs the Saturday before International Museum Day in May. Tourist season begins to ramp up in May, so if you're hoping to save on accommodations and avoid the crowds, plan a trip in March or April.

Key Events:

June-August

These warmer seasons are Normandy's most crowded. But even at its hottest, Normandy usually only sees an average of about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If you're visiting the D-Day Beaches in June, know that your visit may coincide with the annual commemorative events. August is also a popular time for French visitors to travel to Normandy, resulting in inflated hotel rates and crowded tourist sites.

Key Events:

September- November

September, which sees average highs in the upper 60s, is a short window of decent temperatures and fewer crowds. But like spring, fall can be quite rainy, so be sure to bring an umbrella and some layers if you travel in October and November.

Key Events:

December- February

In the less-touristed winter seasons, you might catch some deals on a hotel – but you'll definitely have to bundle up. January and February – historically Normandy's coldest months – see temperatures right around freezing. What's more, some of the area's attractions and museums close in January or operate on limited hours.
