Best Times to Visit Oaxaca

The best times to visit Oaxaca are during the months of April to May and September to October. Both spring and fall are characterized by moderate temperatures and fewer tourists. The months between June and August, as well as the holiday season between mid-December and early-January, constitute high season. For the most part, the winter months – November to March – are considered low season, except for the few weeks that fall across the winter holidays.

June-August

Visitors flock to Oaxaca during this high season when average temperatures hover in the low 80s and room rates jump. Keep in mind that the summertime, especially June, ushers in Oaxaca's wet season, so pack your rain jacket and umbrella if you book your trip this time of year.

Key Events:

  • Guelaguetza "Dance festival" (July)
September-October

Early fall is one of the best times to visit Oaxaca. The region has emptied of most of its tourist crowds, and average temperatures range between the upper 50s and upper 70s. Make sure to pack some layers for trips this time of year. Hotel rates start to dip this time of year too, but keep in mind that they'll spike again around the Day of the Dead celebration on Oct. 31.

Key Events:

  • Dia de los Muertos "Day of the Dead" (October-November)

November-March

Late fall and late winter comprise Oaxaca's low tourist seasons. During this time, travelers can find some good deals on hotel prices. Visitors can also score some steals on hotels after the holiday fiestas have wrapped up, but they'll still want to pack some warm clothes since average lows drop into the 50s and upper 40s this time of year. But keep in mind that the few weeks that span mid-December and early January are jam-packed with people celebrating various fiestas. Room rates rise to reflect the region's swell of activity during this short period of time.

Key Events:

  • Dia de los Muertos "Day of the Dead" (October-November)
  • Virgen de Guadalupe fiesta (December)
  • Virgen de la Soledad fiesta "Virgin of Solitude" (December)
  • Los Posados (December)
  • Noche de Calendas (December)
  • Noche de Rabanos "Night of the Radishes" (December)
April-May

Spring is a sweet time to visit Oaxaca. Room rates and tourist crowds aren't yet at the heights characteristic of summertime, and even though temperatures are high – average highs hover in the upper 80s – there is less average precipitation than the summer.
