With a population of more than 66,000, it may be hard to believe Portland is Maine's largest city. But despite its relatively diminutive size, Portland brims with plenty of attractions and outdoor adventures.  Joe_Potato Getty Images

Located about 8 miles south of downtown Portland, Cape Elizabeth is home to Portland Head Light, one of the most recognized lighthouses in Maine. The area also boasts expansive beaches, including Crescent Beach, and miles of craggy Maine coastline. traveler1116 Getty Images

Maine beaches are easily accessible with the help of the nearby Casco Bay Islands. Visitors can use the Casco Bay Lines ferry service, which transports travelers to six of the islands from the Old Port in downtown Portland. danlogan Getty Images

You can't leave Maine without eating a lobster roll. The roll can be made a variety of ways, but most common ingredients include mayo, drawn butter, chives, celery and lemon juice. Old Port is the city's center. Here, travelers will find a plethora of shops and some of the city's best dining options. The Old Port Festival is not only considered the biggest event in Portland, but one of the biggest in Maine. The outdoor festival features more than 200 food and arts vendors, as well as plenty of activities for kids, such as a waterfront Ferris wheel and a rock climbing wall. Corey Templeton Flickr

The Portland Museum of Art offers tickets to Winslow Homer's former residence in Prouts Neck, Maine (located about 13 miles south of Portland). Situated along the water, Homer's estate served as his workstation for 74 years of his life. He drew inspiration from the coastline and is said to have created many of his masterpieces here.
